This specimen is an 8.76 carat translucent greenish yellow sapphire, presenting as a various shape rough crystal with dimensions of 20.60 by 8.60 by 9.60 mm. The stone exhibits a rough crystal cut, where the cutter has preserved much of the natural crystal morphology while selectively polishing facets and planes to optimize surface reflection. Clarity is graded included at eye level, with internal features that create measured light diffusion rather than aggressive extinction. Color intensity is light, yielding a delicate greenish yellow body tone that disperses evenly across the crystal when oriented to the optic axis most favorable for color transmission. Optical parameters consistent with corundum are evident, including a refractive response that produces firm surface brilliance and modest internal scintillation, with pleochroic tendencies that are subdued in this color range. The polish on exposed planes is excellent, providing high specular reflection from facet junctions and natural planes, while the absence of any enhancement ensures the material is in its native state, sourced from Ceylon, Sri Lanka.
When comparing reflective qualities to other gemstones in the same category, this sapphire exhibits the characteristic corundum balance of strong surface luster and controlled internal light return, which differs from high dispersion species such as zircon that exhibit conspicuous fire, and from lower refractive index gems such as peridot and tourmaline which show softer, less contrasty reflection. Against typical saturated blue sapphires, this light greenish yellow material offers reduced contrast and a gentler, more diffuse brilliance due to its lighter color saturation and included clarity, but benefits from superior surface hardness and polish retention, reflecting more durably than spinel and significantly better than most noncorundum alternatives. The rough crystal presentation emphasizes natural faceting planes and yields a distinctive play of light that collectors value for its geological character, rather than the high contrast scintillation sought in precision faceted gems. The Natural Sapphire Company presents this piece as an unenhanced Ceylon sapphire that combines excellent surface polish, classic corundum refractive behavior, and a soft, elegant light return, making it well suited for connoisseurs who prioritize natural state provenance and technical gemological attributes.
