Product description

This 1.24 carat transparent yellowish green sapphire from Madagascar demonstrates a fusion of geological history and precise lapidary craft, offered by The Natural Sapphire Company. The stone measures 5.76 by 5.09 by 4.52 mm in an asscher cut, octagon shape, with an asscher style pavilion and step facets that create a characteristic hall of mirrors when light is returned through the squared table. The faceting emphasizes symmetry, with a well judged crown and pavilion relationship and an excellent polish that produces crisp facet junctions and clean facet windows. Clarity is described as very very slightly included evaluated at eye level, so the stone reads visually clean to most observers while retaining minor natural characteristics under inspection. Color intensity is medium, a yellowish green tone that responds well to directional light, and the stone has been heat treated to optimize color saturation and internal clarity through controlled modification of trace element valences typical of corundum enhancements.

Geologically this sapphire began forming millions of years ago, deep within Madagascar crustal environments where aluminum rich protoliths were subjected to prolonged high temperature and pressure. Under those conditions, corundum crystallized as aluminum and oxygen assembled into the rigid trigonal lattice that defines sapphire. Trace concentrations of iron and other transition elements were incorporated into the lattice during growth, producing the yellow to green hues observable today. Subsequent tectonic uplift and weathering liberated these crystals from metamorphic host rocks and alluvial redistribution concentrated gem quality material in placer horizons. The stone we present shows the legacy of that formation history in its internal growth patterns and subtle inclusions, and in the slightly deep profile with a 4.52 mm depth relative to its average span of 5.425 mm which serves to concentrate color face up and enhance perceived saturation. The asscher faceting strategy was selected to balance table size, step facets, and pavilion depth to maximize optical depth and create even color distribution for use in refined ring or pendant settings. As with all pieces from The Natural Sapphire Company the provenance, cutting characteristics, and treatment are fully disclosed, allowing technically minded buyers to assess the gem in the context of both its natural formation and its finished gemological qualities.
