Product description

This Burmese 1.76 carat blue star sapphire, presented by The Natural Sapphire Company, measures 7.58 by 6.30 by 3.46 millimeters and is fashioned as an oval cabochon. The gem is translucent with an intense color intensity and an excellent polish, and it carries a clarity grade of slightly included as evaluated at eye level. No enhancement has been applied to this material, so the color, translucency, and asterism are entirely natural characteristics of the stone. The cabochon cut and the dome proportions have been executed to maximize the optical phenomenon known as asterism, and under a single overhead light source the specimen displays a well-centered, sharply defined star that resolves crisply across the dome. The combination of intense blue saturation with a balanced translucency yields a clear, even body color that serves as an ideal backdrop for the star and demonstrates the classic aesthetic expected of fine Burmese star sapphires.

The cutting and finishing of this sapphire follow technical principles specific to asteriated corundum. Because asterism in sapphire is produced by oriented needle-like rutile inclusions, the cutter oriented the basal plane of the crystal parallel to the table of the cabochon so that the rutile silk lies perpendicularly to the light path and produces a coherent star. The cabochon dome height, represented here by the 3.46 millimeter depth relative to the length and width, is deliberately sufficient to allow the light to intersect multiple layers of rutile and converge into the distinct star image while maintaining an ergonomic profile suitable for many jewelry settings. The oval outline has been retained with symmetrical shoulders and a uniformly convex dome to prevent optical distortion of the rays and to preserve star mobility as the stone is rotated. The excellent polish minimizes surface scattering and ensures that the star is delineated by internal scattering rather than masking glare, a critical distinction that indicates high-quality lapidary work.

Clarity in this piece is characterized as slightly included at eye level, which in the context of a star sapphire is often an advantageous trade-off. The inclusions responsible for the asterism are fine, oriented rutile needles, commonly referred to as silk, that produce the star effect; these are present at densities and orientations adequate to form a sharp star without producing excessive clouding that would degrade color saturation. There may be localized pinpoint inclusions or small internal clouds visible under magnification or when examined against a bright background, but no evidence of cleavage planes or large fractures that would compromise structural integrity. The untreated Burmese origin contributes to the stone’s intense hue and even color distribution, attributes that are often prized by connoisseurs and that underscore the natural provenance and mineralogical quality of the corundum. For collectors and gemologists, the combination of eye-visible asterism, intact polish, and natural origin provides a verifiable profile of a classic, untreated star sapphire.

From a durability and daily-wear perspective, this 1.76 carat blue star sapphire is highly suitable for use in everyday jewelry. As a corundum, sapphire ranks 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, conferring excellent resistance to abrasion and surface wear compared with most other gem materials, and it exhibits no true cleavage, making it resilient against chipping and breakage under normal wear conditions. The presence of oriented rutile silk does not significantly reduce the intrinsic toughness of the host corundum unless surface-reaching fractures are present, which this stone does not display at a level that would be detrimental. For optimal longevity in daily-worn items such as rings or bracelets, recommended mounting strategies include a protective bezel or a low-profile four-prong setting that secures the rim of the cabochon and shields the dome from direct strikes. Routine care is straightforward: cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft brush will maintain luster, while ultrasonic and steam cleaning are generally acceptable for sound, untreated sapphires but should be used with caution if any surface-reaching fractures or fillings are suspected. Chemical exposure is not a significant concern for corundum under typical conditions, but mechanical shock should be avoided as with any gemstone set for daily wear. This specimen’s combination of natural, well-executed cutting, intense color, and structural soundness makes it a practical and enduring choice for those seeking an authentic Burmese star sapphire for everyday jewelry.
