From the heart of Ceylon, where ancient rivers cut through blue limestone and monsoon rains whisper over the hills, this purple star sapphire began its long journey. Formed deep within metamorphic rock, trace inclusions of rutile aligned as thin needles that would one day catch the light and reveal a shimmering star. Local miners in Sri Lanka carefully recovered this rough, then passed it to skilled lapidaries whose hands have shaped sapphires for generations. The cultural history of Ceylon sapphires is woven into local stories of protection and guidance, and this stone carries that heritage, a translucent oval that holds both the geology of the island and the craft of its people. At The Natural Sapphire Company we honor that lineage by tracing each step of the gem from mine to workshop, ensuring the tale behind the jewel remains as vivid as the star within it.
Once in the studio, the rough was thoughtfully examined and transformed into a fine cabochon, cut to maximize the asterism and the stone s natural glow. The finished gem weighs 1.75 carat, with dimensions of 7.53 by 5.67 by 3.74 mm, and presents a medium intense purple hue that is both regal and subtle. Its clarity grade is very slightly included, evaluated at eye level, which preserves character while maintaining translucency that allows the six ray star to glide across the dome as the light moves. The polish is excellent, and no enhancement has been applied, leaving the sapphire in its natural state. This combination of attributes makes it ideal for a center stone in a bespoke ring or a pendant that will be worn close to the heart, where the star can be admired daily. We at The Natural Sapphire Company can advise on settings that protect the cabochon while showcasing the asterism, and we offer secure mounting options that honor the gem s origin and craftsmanship. Simple care, such as gentle cleaning with warm soapy water and avoiding harsh blows, will preserve its beauty for generations, allowing the star to continue its quiet journey from Ceylon s earth to your collection.
