This is a 13.79 carat, various shape, yellowish brown sapphire from Ceylon Sri Lanka, presented in a rough crystal cut with dimensions 23.40 x 9.60 x 8.40 mm, translucent in appearance with medium color intensity and an excellent polish, untreated and with no enhancement, a specimen that is notable for its combination of substantial weight and uncommon body color when compared to typical yellow and brown tone sapphires in the market. From a gemological perspective the medium color intensity denotes a balanced combination of tone and saturation that preserves the stone's warm tertiary hue without tipping into the deeper, more common brown dominated material or the paler yellow categories, making this piece rare both for its size in the yellowish brown spectrum and for its presentation as a natural, unheated Ceylon crystal. The rough crystal cut retains original growth surfaces and terminations that are beneficial for collector display and that also provide clear reference points for precision cutting if weight retention and optimal color distribution are required.
For the lapidary and design minded buyer this sapphire offers multiple technical pathways, each with predictable trade offs between weight retention and optical performance, choices we routinely consult on at The Natural Sapphire Company. Because the material is translucent with medium color intensity, conservative faceting strategies such as elongated step cuts or modified mixed cuts will preserve the body color and yield a strong face up appearance, while careful planning of pavilion angles and crown height can minimize color leakage into the depths and enhance apparent saturation. If a more diffuse, silky presentation is preferred a high quality cabochon will emphasize the warm tone and internal glow, whereas polishing to mirror finish on precision facets will exploit the excellent polish already present on the crystal. Inclusion mapping and orientation are advised prior to cutting to maximize clarity and to take advantage of any directional pleochroism typical of corundum, and for collectors who value specimens the stone's current rough crystal form also has intrinsic appeal as a natural Ceylon sapphire example.
