Product description

This purplish pink sapphire began its story deep beneath the ancient highlands of Ceylon, Sri Lanka, where heat and pressure worked for millions of years to concentrate aluminum and trace elements into one of nature s most poetic minerals. From the first glint of color in alluvial gravel, this crystal was recognized for its vivid color intensity and its transparent clarity, a rare combination that caught the eye of our field team on a routine sourcing expedition. The Natural Sapphire Company has long cultivated relationships with responsible miners in these storied regions, and this 2.26 carat round gem carries with it the geography and geology of its birthplace. Its dimensions of 7.88 x 7.71 x 4.87 mm reflect the thoughtful decisions made at each stage, from extraction to preform shaping, decisions that preserve the sapphire s natural character while preparing it for the transformative work of the cutter. There is a romance to that first reveal, the moment a rough stone yields a hint of its inner life, and with this sapphire that inner life announced itself as a vivid purplish pink that seems to balance the warmth of rose with the depth of amethyst, a hue that sings of sunlit monsoon skies and the rich soils of Ceylon.

When the rough arrived at our atelier it was entrusted to a cutter whose sensibility favors brilliance and balance, and the result is a round mixed brilliant cut that maximizes both color and sparkle. The mixed brilliant proportions were chosen to marry a lively crown faceting pattern with a pavilion geometry that returns light with vivacity and depth, and the excellent polish ensures that every table facet acts as a small stage for the sapphire s color to perform. At 2.26 carats this stone occupies a beautiful middle ground between presence and wearability, large enough to be a distinctive center for a bespoke engagement ring or an elegant solitary pendant, while remaining comfortable for daily wear. The clarity has been evaluated at eye level as very very slightly included, which means that to a casual glance the gem reads as transparent and clean, yet under magnification it reveals the delicate details of its natural formation. As part of the honest stories we share with our clients, this sapphire has been heat treated, a long established enhancement that gently refines color and clarity in a way that respects the stone s origin and enhances its visual appeal.

The true signature of this gem is written in the small internal features that whisper of its birth, and those inclusions are what make it unmistakable. Scattered within the pavilion and faintly veiled near the girdle are minuscule, needle like rutile inclusions that catch light as tiny scintillating threads, a silvery whisper when viewed under a loupe. They do not compromise the gem s transparency, because the clarity grade remains very very slightly included at eye level, but they add a filamentary texture that directs reflections and gives the stone a subtle inner shimmer. Interspersed among these needles are pinpoints of crystalline matter, tiny reflective specks that act like distant stars within the gem, and a few small negative crystals that hold microscopic cavities of possibility. There is also gentle growth zoning, a layered record of color that runs like faint contour lines through the stone, and a delicate fingerprint like inclusion that resembles a clouded water droplet trapped at the moment of formation. Together these features read less like imperfections and more like a fingerprint of place, a natural signature unique to this Sri Lankan sapphire. Under different lights they behave like actors obeying a director, sometimes yielding a deep saturated face up color, sometimes revealing brighter internal fire, always reminding the wearer that the stone carries an intimate geological biography.

As stewards of this sapphire The Natural Sapphire Company invites you to imagine the next chapter of its journey as a piece of jewelry that will be worn and admired for generations. Its vivid purplish pink tone and mixed brilliant cut make it an ideal focal point for settings that celebrate color, whether set in warm rose gold to accentuate its rosy notes or in white gold to emphasize its crystalline clarity. Because the stone has been heat treated it is stable for regular wear but as with all fine gemstones it should be protected from sudden extremes of heat and from harsh chemicals, and routine care with gentle cleaning will preserve its polished brilliance. We provide full information on origin and enhancement with each gem and can assist with bespoke design options, gemstone certification, and setting recommendations that will honor this sapphire s natural story. In choosing this 2.26 carat Ceylon sapphire you take home more than a stone, you take home a condensed piece of earth s history, a signature of formation and craft that will become woven into your own story, and we look forward to helping you realize that transformation.
