This 1.60 carat oval pinkish purple sapphire from Ceylon Sri Lanka presents precise proportions at 7.45 by 5.01 by 4.60 mm, exhibiting a mixed brilliant cut that combines a brilliant style crown with a modified pavilion to optimize both scintillation and color saturation. The crown faceting pattern is engineered to produce strong table and crown reflections, while the pavilion facets are angled to return light through the heart of the stone, resulting in an intense color intensity that reads consistently across viewing angles. Clarity is assessed as very very slightly included at eye level, which in practice means the stone appears transparent and clean to the naked eye, contributing to high light return and crisp facet contrast. The polish is excellent, which enhances faceting crispness and surface brightness, and the sapphire is unenhanced, preserving the natural crystal chemistry and optical characteristics that distinguish true Ceylon material.
For a custom setting the mixed brilliant faceting invites several complementary design approaches, each emphasizing a different attribute of the stone. To maximize perceived brightness and contrast select small round brilliant diamonds in VS clarity and G to H color as a halo or tapered shoulders, the white field of diamonds increasing scintillation and making the pinkish purple center appear more vivid. For a warmer presentation opt for 18 karat rose gold with small pink sapphires set as accent stones to create a tonal gradient and to play up the pink component of the hue. For a cooler, more modern look choose platinum or white gold with straight baguette or tapered baguette side stones, the step facets of the baguettes creating a calm, reflective foil that highlights the mixed brilliant pavilion. For a more colorful statement consider mint green tourmaline or soft peach morganite accents, the contrasting hues producing dynamic color interactions when the stone moves. A four or six prong head will both secure the oval and allow light to pass through the girdle, while a low bezel can protect the girdle and show off the pavilion depth.
At The Natural Sapphire Company we can provide detailed facet maps and mounting sketches to illustrate how specific halo or side stone configurations will influence both color and brilliance, and we offer bespoke setting options so you can select metal, accent stones, and exact prong counts to suit your aesthetic and wearability needs. If you would like technical drawings or a video of the stone under different lighting conditions we can arrange them to assist with your custom design decision.
