This is a single, transparent pink sapphire weighing one point two zero carats, cut into a cushion shape with precise dimensions of six point six five by four point six nine by three point seven nine millimeters, presented by The Natural Sapphire Company. The gem has been faceted to a mixed brilliant specification, which in practical terms means a combination of brilliant style facets on the crown paired with modified and step influenced facets in the pavilion, an arrangement chosen to balance lively scintillation with sustained face up color. The cutter maintained proportions that produce a depth of approximately sixty seven percent relative to the average of the length and width, a geometry that supports strong light return while retaining the stone s natural color saturation. Clarity is graded as very slightly included when evaluated at eye level, a condition that yields high transparency and sparkle, while the medium color intensity positions the pink hue in a range that reads vivid in daylight, but elegant and wearable in subdued lighting. The surface has been finished to an excellent polish, and importantly this sapphire has received no enhancement, preserving its unmodified crystalline character from Tanzania.
To understand this stone s presence in your jewelry it helps to travel back in time to the conditions under which corundum crystals grow. Millions of years ago in the geological provinces that now form parts of Tanzania, aluminum rich protoliths were subjected to regional metamorphism and localized high temperature events driven by crustal loading and tectonic convergence. Under those elevated temperatures and pressures, aluminum oxide re crystallized into corundum, and where trace amounts of chromium were available chromium substituted into the crystal lattice imparting selective absorption that produces the pink phenotype. Fluid activity during metamorphism encouraged mass transport and the slow, rhythmic growth of tabular to equant corundum crystals, and periods of quiescent cooling allowed the development of well defined crystal faces and internal growth zoning. Over deep time uplift and erosion liberated these gem quality crystals from their host rocks, concentrating them in placer gravels and near surface alluvial deposits where local miners collected rough material. The internal features preserved within this gem, the tiny growth related inclusions that are visible only upon careful inspection, are consistent with natural crystallization and support the stone s untreated status, while the clarity and transparency reflect a particularly favorable growth environment and subsequent careful cutting.
From the lapidary perspective the combined factors of size, proportion and faceting deliver a technically satisfying and commercially versatile gem. The mixed brilliant cut has been executed to maximize both scintillation from the crown and depth of color from the pavilion, a deliberate compromise that allows the face up pink to read consistently under a variety of lighting conditions, while the depth near sixty seven percent sustains return of white and colored light without creating a dark window. The very slightly included clarity grade means that internal features do not interrupt the stone s overall transparency, enabling strong contrast and sharp facet reflections, and the excellent polish enhances the interface between the gem and any mounting, producing crisp facet junctions and increased apparent brightness. At one point two zero carats and with the supplied dimensions this sapphire sits comfortably on the finger as a solitaire, or it can be accentuated by a narrow halo of white diamonds to amplify perceived size and color saturation, and because corundum rates nine on the Mohs hardness scale the stone is suitable for regular wear when properly set. The Natural Sapphire Company stands behind the sourcing and evaluation of this piece, and we are prepared to provide additional technical images, magnified inspection notes, and guidance on settings that will respect the gem s natural, untreated provenance.
