Product description

From the moment this sapphire first formed deep in the earth, its story began with slow geological patience, heat and pressure shaping corundum crystals that would one day catch and hold light. Mined in Montana from storied gravels and upland deposits, this transparent 1.38 carat round blue sapphire measures 6.38 by 6.39 by 4.43 mm, a gem that carries the cool clarity and understated personality often associated with that American provenance. Free of any enhancement, with a clarity grade of very slightly included as evaluated at eye level, this stone offers an honest and natural presence. The medium light color intensity gives it an airy, luminous blue that feels fresh and approachable rather than brooding. Cut in a mixed brilliant cut and finished with an excellent polish, the pavilion and crown facets were arranged to coax maximum life from the material, transforming raw crystal into a gem that returns light with fine white flashes and delicate blue scintillation. As with all fine sapphires, the internal features are part of the identity of the stone, and the small, eye level inclusions in this piece add a fingerprint of origin without compromising its overall transparency and brightness.

The cutter who handled this Montana sapphire chose the mixed brilliant cut because it amplifies the reflective qualities that matter most in a small to medium sized round stone. Compared to traditional step cuts and cabochons often used for certain sapphires, the mixed brilliant cut produces stronger brilliance and more lively scintillation, creating dancing pinpoints of light that enliven the table and crown. When set beside deep velvety Kashmir sapphires, which are prized for saturated cornflower blue and a dense, silky glow, this Montana stone reads as cooler and more crystalline, offering a brighter and more open light return rather than the plush depth of a Kashmir. Against classic Burmese sapphires, which can show rich saturation and strong body color, the Montana sapphire will seem airier and more delicate, with reflections that lean toward icy whites and pale blue flashes. Compared to many commercial heat treated stones, which may show intensified color but also often conceal internal character, this untreated Montana gem retains a natural luminosity and clarity that allow light to travel more freely through the crystal, resulting in crisp, lively reflections and a genuine sense of depth. In practical terms, the excellent polish lets every facet edge act as a mirror, increasing sparkle and contrast in lighting from sunlight to candlelight.

This sapphire is ready to become the centerpiece of an intimate engagement ring or a personal heirloom that carries a sense of place and provenance. In daytime sun the stone throws cool, silvery flashes that complement modern metals and white gold settings, and in softer evening light it reveals layered blue tones that feel both serene and sophisticated. The modest carat weight and classic round shape make it ideal for a refined solitaire, or as the focal point of a delicate halo that can amplify its presence while preserving the natural charm of the material. At The Natural Sapphire Company we celebrate stones that tell a story, and this Montana sapphire speaks of glacial rivers, careful recovery by attentive hands, and precise facet work that honors the crystal rather than forcing an unnatural appearance. The result is a gem that lives and breathes light in a way that feels authentic. If you are drawn to a sapphire that balances lively brilliance with honest, untreated character, this transparent 1.38 carat Montana round with a mixed brilliant cut and excellent polish will deliver both visual beauty and a meaningful origin story that can be worn and treasured for generations.
