This 3.55 carat cushion shape green sapphire from Ceylon, offered by The Natural Sapphire Company, is a technically refined example of corundum engineering and lapidary craft. Measuring 11.11 by 8.36 by 3.98 millimeters, the pavilion depth of 3.98 millimeters corresponds to a depth percentage of approximately 40.9 percent based on average length and width, a deliberate choice by the cutter to emphasize color saturation while maintaining table size for face-up presence. The stone is fashioned in a mixed brilliant cut, employing a brilliant-style crown to promote scintillation and a modified pavilion that controls light leakage and deepens tone. Clarity is graded as very slightly included at eye level, with minor crystal and rutile features positioned and oriented to minimize visual impact in typical mounting. The sapphire is transparent, exhibits dark color intensity consistent with strong iron-related chromophores, and shows subtle pleochroic shifts between bluish and yellowish green depending on orientation. Polish is excellent, with crisp facet junctions and uniform facet angles that optimize return and surface luster. Enhancement disclosure is clear, the gem having undergone controlled heat treatment to improve color uniformity and reduce silk, a stable and standard practice that enhances long-term appearance under normal wear.
The journey of this sapphire from mine to market reflects a sequence of technical decisions and ethical sourcing practices. Extracted in Sri Lanka, the rough material was assessed on site for crystal habit, inclusions, and natural color zoning, then selected for suitability for a cushion mixed brilliant orientation. During preforming, the cutter mapped internal features using magnification and light transmission techniques to align the table and pavilion so as to preserve weight while maximizing face-up color and brilliance. Precision faceting followed, with each pavilion and crown angle calculated to balance the gem’s refractive index and dark color intensity, then heat treatment was applied in a monitored kiln to stabilize the desirable hue. Final finishing included an excellent polish and a detailed visual inspection to confirm the very slightly included clarity grade at eye level. The Natural Sapphire Company presents this stone with full disclosure of origin and enhancement, recommending settings that allow light access to the pavilion and that respect the gem’s cushion proportions to showcase its deep green saturation and engineered brilliance.
