This yellow sapphire began its life in the mineral rich soils of Ceylon Sri Lanka, where generations of miners read the earth like a map and lifted rough crystals from river gravels with reverence. From a single rough crystal the cutter traced a path that would reveal a heart of golden fire. Unheated and free from enhancement, the stone carries the honest voice of its origin. The journey from mine to bench is a slow choreography, a series of hands that include experienced sorters in Galle and meticulous couriers who ensure the crystal arrives whole at the studio. There the rough was studied under loupe and light, and the decision to preserve its vivid color saturation guided every choice. The story of this gem is not only where it came from, it is also how it was brought to life by human eyes that sought to honor the stone rather than alter it.
At the cutting bench the 3.48 carat oval sapphire was given a mixed brilliant cut, a design that combines the scintillating fire of brilliant facets with well controlled pavilion angles to return light with exceptional vibrancy. Measured at 10.55 by 8.80 by 4.59 millimeters, the oval profile was mapped and marked for symmetry, each facet planned to balance color and brilliance. The cutter shaped a slightly generous table to reveal the sapphire s vivid yellow while grading the crown facets to scatter white light into lively flashes, and then arranged a complementary pavilion with carefully calculated facet junctions to avoid dark windows and to deepen the centre glow. The clarity grade is recorded as very very slightly included, evaluated at eye level, and each inclusion was considered in the faceting plan so that they neither interrupt the visual field nor diminish the stone s inner lustre. A final excellent polish brought every facet to a mirror finish, allowing crisp facet edges and clean reflections that turn motion into light.
Framing this central light are clusters of white natural diamonds, chosen and placed to amplify the sapphire s warmth with cool, crisp white brilliance. The design features pear shaped diamonds weighing approximately 0.50 carats, round diamonds weighing approximately 0.32 carats, a further set of pear shaped diamonds of approximately 0.20 carats, and a complement of round diamonds totaling approximately 0.48 carats. All of the accent stones are graded Very Slightly Included in clarity, within the VS1 to VS2 range, and carry a color grade of F. The pear shapes sit like flower petals around the oval, their elongated forms echoing the sapphire s silhouette, while the round brilliants act as points of focused sparkle. Each diamond was selected not only for its quality but also for its cut consistency and symmetry, because even the smallest misaligned facet would alter the play of light across the gallery. Set entirely in 18 karat yellow gold, the warm metal was chosen to harmonize with the sapphire s vivid hue, and the polished gold setting acts as a reflective stage that supports the brilliance of each stone without competing with it.
From the first moment the rough was touched to the final inspection under a jeweller s loupe, the making of this ring was about precision and restraint. The mixed brilliant faceting of the central sapphire is a technical answer to a poetic problem, a way to capture and return sunlight while preserving the natural color that made the gem desirable in the first place. The diamonds were matched for cut and proportion, and the setting was engineered to hold each gem with mechanical integrity while allowing light to move freely through crown and pavilion. This ring is offered by The Natural Sapphire Company as an expression of the partnership between nature and craft, a piece where provenance, untreated beauty, and exacting faceting come together. If you are drawn to stones that speak of place and people as much as of light, this ring is an invitation to wear a small chapter of Ceylon s earth and the hands that shaped it.
