This Montana sapphire began its story deep in ancient river gravels, where ice age meltwaters and mountain weathering revealed pockets of corundum, carrying color and clarity from the earth to the surface. Miners working by hand and sluice, guided by generations of local knowledge, recovered this transparent 1.79 carat oval bluish green sapphire, which later arrived at our atelier at The Natural Sapphire Company. The gem measures 7.47 by 5.83 by 4.65 mm, and the cutter chose a mixed brilliant cut to honor both the stone and its provenance, preserving weight while opening pathways for light to dance through its depths. Evaluated at eye level as very slightly included, with very light color saturation, and an excellent polish, the sapphire carries the honest signature of Montana origin, with no enhancement, and a natural, airy blue green that shifts with the light. Our craftsmen set the stone in a delicate four prong setting of 14K yellow gold, where each curve and meeting point is finished by hand, allowing the sapphire to sit proudly above the band and capture light from every angle.
When you consider light performance, this mixed brilliant oval behaves in ways that are uniquely engaging compared with other classic cuts and styles. The mixed brilliant pavilion sends well defined, sparkling facets back to the eye, creating lively scintillation and an open, modern brilliance that reads brighter than many step cuts such as emerald or asscher styles, which emphasize broad flashes and a hall of mirrors effect instead of disco like sparkle. Compared with a standard round brilliant, the oval shape leans into elongation, producing a subtle interplay between broad flashes and smaller scintillation, and in this example excellent faceting and polish minimize any bow tie effect, resulting in a clean, even return of light. Against cushion cuts and antique cuts, which often favor soft, romantic flashes and deeper color saturation, this sapphire shows a fresher, lighter presence, its very light saturation allowing the bluish green character to glow rather than dominate. Because the stone is unenhanced, its interaction with light is a direct conversation with nature, and the 14K yellow gold setting warms the gem, bringing out its green undertones while offering durable everyday wear. If you value a piece with a clear origin story, honest natural color, and a cut that balances fire and brilliance, this Montana oval from The Natural Sapphire Company is crafted to connect, perform, and endure.
