From the riverbeds of Ceylon, this sapphire began as a pocket of crystallized aluminum and trace iron, forming over eons beneath tropical soils, and arriving at The Natural Sapphire Company as a piece of island history. Our artisans selected this transparent 1.48 carat oval sapphire for its balanced, medium intense blue saturation, noting its clean appearance at eye level with very very slightly included clarity, and its excellent polish. The stone measures 8.92 x 5.46 x 3.60 mm, and its mixed brilliant cut was chosen to honor both the gem and the hand that shaped it. Untreated and wholly natural, its journey from mining to market is marked by careful sorting, precise cutting, and the gentle setting into a warm 14K yellow gold ring that frames the gem like sunlight in water. Wearing this ring is to carry a fragment of Ceylonese geology, craftsmanship, and cultural resonance, a reminder of the long lineage of sapphires prized across generations in Sri Lanka and beyond.
In light performance the mixed brilliant oval offers a compelling middle path between the pure dazzle of a round brilliant and the contemplative glow of a step cut. The mixed brilliant crown facets scatter light into lively scintillation, producing bright flashes that dance as the hand moves, while the pavilion design preserves deep color saturation and strong face up color, resulting in both sparkle and vivid blue tone. Compared to a full brilliant oval, this mixed approach often reduces the severity of the bowtie effect, giving more even light return across the table, and compared to step cuts the stone gives greater scintillation and lively white light return rather than broad, mirror like flashes. Against a round brilliant, the oval shape spreads weight visually, offering a larger face up appearance at similar carat weight, while the mixed cut keeps reflections lively without sacrificing depth. Set in 14K yellow gold, the warm metal enhances the sapphire’s medium intense hue, creating a radiant contrast that is both classic and contemporary. At The Natural Sapphire Company this ring is presented as a story worn on the hand, a gem whose origin, cut, and setting have all been chosen to celebrate the natural beauty of a Ceylon sapphire.
