Product description

This exquisite bi color sapphire, offered by The Natural Sapphire Company, is a transparent 0.96 carat gem cut in an elegant emerald shape, measuring 6.59 by 5.20 by 2.57 millimeters. Its stepped facets and rectangular outline create a refined profile with a length to width ratio that flatters both classic and contemporary settings. The gem displays medium intense color and a striking zonal distribution that shifts between a rich blue and a lively yellow green when viewed from different angles. Clarity has been evaluated at eye level as very slightly included, which means that under normal viewing conditions the stone appears clean and bright, while under magnification it reveals the natural internal characteristics that authenticate its origin and natural growth. The polish is excellent, enhancing the stone's transparency and allowing light to travel through the pavilion and return with a lively, yet controlled, brilliance. Importantly, this sapphire has received no enhancement, making it an untreated natural example from the celebrated gem fields of Ceylon, Sri Lanka.

The story of this sapphire begins many millions of years ago deep within the earth, where aluminum rich protoliths were subjected to intense heat and pressure during regional metamorphism. Corundum crystals formed in narrow windows of chemical and physical conditions when aluminum oxide combined with trace elements in the host rock. In the case of this bi color sapphire, fluctuating concentrations of iron and titanium on the one hand, and local variations in trace elements and growth rate on the other, produced distinct color zones as the crystal grew. Periods when iron and titanium dominated led to the formation of the deep blue core, while intervals with a different chemical milieu favored the lighter yellow green tones near the surface. Over geologic time, tectonic uplift and erosion liberated these crystals from their primary metamorphic host rocks, concentrating them in alluvial gravels and riverbeds across Sri Lanka. It was in these gem gravels, washed and sorted by water and time, that the crystal was eventually recovered, still bearing the layered memory of its complex growth history.

From a gemological perspective this sapphire combines a number of features that an educated buyer will find compelling. The emerald cut, with its long, flat facets, emphasizes the stone's color zoning in a sophisticated way, creating a window into the sapphire rather than obscuring it with excessive brilliance. The clarity grade of very slightly included at eye level indicates that including features are minimal and do not detract from the gem's overall visual appeal, while these natural inclusions are valuable markers of authenticity that trained gemmologists use to confirm a natural origin. The medium intense color intensity is an attractive balance for a bi color piece because it allows both the saturated blue and the vibrant yellow green to be perceived distinctly without one dominating the other. Pleochroism, a common optical property in corundum, can be observed here as the stone displays different colors when rotated under light, a quality that gives the gem life and movement when set in jewelry. The dimensions and depth produce a depth percent that preserves face up spread and makes efficient use of the 0.96 carat weight, so the gem sits well in rings and pendants where visibility and wearability are important. The lack of enhancements, particularly heat treatment, is significant because untreated sapphires from Sri Lanka are rarer and command a premium among collectors and connoisseurs.

For the purchaser seeking both a story and a sound gemological investment, this sapphire offers an exceptional combination of provenance, aesthetics, and natural integrity. Ceylon, or Sri Lanka, has a long standing reputation for producing sapphires with lively color and excellent clarity, and the provenance of this stone enhances its desirability and collectibility. The emerald cut bi color presentation is ideally suited to bespoke jewelry where the cutter and designer can orient the stone to display its most flattering color interplay, for example by highlighting the blue core when set in a bezel that frames the window, or by positioning the yellow green zone to catch light from the crown. Care for an untreated sapphire is straightforward, requiring occasional gentle cleaning and protection from sharp blows and extreme thermal shock. At The Natural Sapphire Company we document the characteristics of each gem, provide expert guidance on settings that will preserve and accentuate the stone, and support our clients with detailed, transparent information about origin, treatment status, and grading observations. This 0.96 carat emerald cut bi color sapphire is a rare natural expression of corundum, a gem that carries a clear geological narrative, precise gemological attributes, and the versatile beauty to become the centerpiece of an heirloom piece.
