Product description

From the time this sapphire began forming deep within Madagascar’s ancient geology, its story was one of patient transformation, a slow dance of heat and pressure that coaxed aluminum and trace elements into a crystal of singular personality. Weathered layers and shifting streams carried rough sapphires into alluvial beds where local miners carefully recovered material that would later be judged and selected by our team. At The Natural Sapphire Company we have a particular affection for sapphires from Madagascar, because they often carry unexpected color shifts and a lively, natural character that responds so well to mindful cutting. This particular stone, a transparent bi color sapphire, shows the imprint of its birthplace in every subtle hue and internal feature, and knowing where and how it formed helps you feel connected to the moment it first caught the light.

The gem in hand weighs 0.68 carat, and that precise weight is central to its rarity and value. At just under seven tenths of a carat, the sapphire balances portability with presence, delivering a tangible sense of substance without overwhelming a delicate setting. Its proportions measure 6.10 x 4.35 x 2.59 mm, and the choice of an emerald cut magnifies the gem’s clarity and bi color character, creating a window like plane that lets you read the stone at a glance. The clarity grade is very slightly included evaluated at eye level, and those minor internal features sit respectfully within the body of the gem, adding evidence of a natural origin while maintaining transparency and light return. With a medium light color intensity the sapphire shows gentle, nuanced blues and greens that shift as the angle changes, and the excellent polish ensures that each facet plays its part in the gem’s subtle brilliance. Perhaps most important to collectors and connoisseurs is that this sapphire has no enhancement, a quality that commands attention and a premium in today’s market.

Our cutters approached this rough with the weight and the story in mind, because preserving carat weight while unlocking the gem’s most flattering proportions is an art in itself. An emerald cut is often selected to emphasize clarity and color zoning, and in this case the cut allows the bi color effect to read clearly across the table, creating a slender banding of tone that can appear differently under varied light. The 0.68 carat weight is significant because value in sapphires does not increase linearly with size, it increases exponentially at certain thresholds, and maintaining nearly seven tenths of a carat in a piece with excellent polish and natural color requires both disciplined planning and technical skill. The fact that this stone is natural and unheated from Madagascar enhances its scarcity, as many sapphires on the market receive treatments to improve color and clarity. Unenhanced stones of this size and character are sought after for bespoke pieces, because they tell an honest geological story and age gracefully as part of a meaningful design.

When you hold this sapphire, or see it set in a refined mount, the 0.68 carat weight becomes a practical measure of how the gem wears and how it commands attention. It is large enough to be the focal point of a solitaire ring, elegant enough for a fine halo setting, and versatile enough to be combined with delicate side stones without losing its individual voice. The provenance from Madagascar, the emerald cut that opens the gem to the eye, the very slightly included clarity that confirms its natural history, the medium light intensity that gives it an accessible and wearable personality, the excellent polish that maximizes its visual appeal, and the total absence of enhancement all combine to make this bi color sapphire a rare and considered choice. At The Natural Sapphire Company we curate and present such stones with the belief that a gemstone’s journey from earth to finger is part of its value, and the measured weight of 0.68 carat tells you as much about potential rarity and investment as it does about beauty and wearability. If you seek a piece that speaks of place, process, and provenance, this sapphire answers that call with quiet confidence.
