This GIA certified 54.51 carat oval blue star sapphire presents as a semi translucent cabochon with dimensions 22.97 by 17.22 by 13.64 millimeters. The gem displays intense color intensity within the blue range, consistent with fine Ceylon material, and its clarity is graded as included at eye level, primarily due to oriented silk and discrete mineral inclusions that generate the asterism rather than detract from it. The asterism is well defined and centered, produced by parallel rutile needles aligned within the corundum lattice, creating a sharp six ray star that traverses the dome with movement of the light source. No enhancement has been applied, and the GIA report confirms natural origin and the absence of heat or diffusion treatments, providing independent verification of provenance and treatment status.
From a lapidary perspective the cutter optimized the proportions for maximal star contrast and light return, retaining a relatively high dome with a depth approximately 59 percent of the length to concentrate reflected light from the oriented silk. The oval outline is well balanced, with symmetry sufficient to maintain a centered star when viewed on axis, and the excellent polish enhances the star s definition by minimizing surface scattering. The semi translucent body allows a pronounced star while preserving depth of body color, and the combination of intense blue saturation and fine silk yields a vivid, velvety appearance under diffuse illumination. For collectors and connoisseurs this stone offers both display quality asterism and robust carat weight, making it suitable for museum style mounts or bespoke jewelry where the dome can be presented front and center. The Natural Sapphire Company stands behind this piece with full GIA documentation and can advise on setting options that preserve the stone s orientation and minimize light leakage, thereby maximizing the visible star in wearable applications.
