This 4.07 carat cushion shape blue sapphire measures 9.59 by 8.38 by 5.39 millimeters, a well balanced table to depth relationship that yields a depth of approximately 60 percent, a proportion that supports strong face up presence while preserving good light return. The cutter opted for a mixed brilliant cut, with a brilliant style crown to maximize scintillation, and a step influenced pavilion to preserve color saturation and stability of blue tone. The result is a stone that reads as transparent, with lively facet-to-facet contrast, crisp light flashes from the crown facets, and deep color wells from the pavilion facets that prevent windowing even at the table. Clarity is described as very very slightly included at eye level, indicating minute pinpoint inclusions that do not detract from the overall transparency or interfere with light performance, and polish is excellent, producing sharp facet junctions and mirror like facet surfaces that enhance both brilliance and color transmission. The sapphire has vivid color intensity, a saturated Ceylon blue that balances purity and depth, and it has been heat treated, a stable enhancement widely accepted in the trade that optimizes the stone’s hue without compromising durability, the documented origin of this gem is Ceylon Sri Lanka, a source known for producing lively, velvety blue sapphires with distinct clean tone.
For a custom setting this sapphire pairs exceptionally well with white brilliant cut diamonds as contrast stones, a halo or shoulder accents in F to G color and VS clarity in small melee sizes will increase perceived size and add dynamic scintillation without overpowering the rich blue. For a more architectural design, tapered baguette or trapezoid step cut diamonds set as flanking stones will echo the mixed cut geometry and emphasize the sapphire’s depth and table, while a simple three stone arrangement with two 0.30 to 0.50 carat baguettes will provide classic balance. Metal choice will influence color appearance, yellow or rose gold will warm the overall presentation subtly enhancing the blue by contrast, platinum or white gold will create a high contrast, modern look that reads cooler and sharper. Because of the 5.39 millimeter depth, a prong setting with an open gallery is recommended to maintain face up brilliance, four or six high quality prongs will secure the cushion while showing maximum table. At The Natural Sapphire Company we can recommend exact diamond sizes and setting profiles to complement the gem’s proportions, and provide CAD mockups to ensure the final piece realizes the intended optical and aesthetic relationships.
