Product description

This vivid blue sapphire began its story deep within the folded earth of Ceylon, Sri Lanka, where heat, pressure, and time conspired to crystallize aluminum and trace elements into a gem of remarkable depth. Miners working centuries old alluvial deposits and weathered hard rock veins recovered rough material that hinted at intense blue color and exceptional transparency. The piece you see now, certified by C.Dunaigre, carried with it the quiet testimony of that place, a single crystal that survived weathering and transport, a stone that promised beauty to anyone who could read the language of color and light. At 3.15 carats, and measuring 9.70 by 7.24 by 5.56 millimeters, this oval sapphire presented a generous size in the rough, and its vivid blue saturation suggested a high potential for a final gem that would command the eye.

Once recovered, the sapphire entered the hands of master cutters whose task was to reveal what nature had hidden. The cutter chose a mixed brilliant cut to balance sparkling light return with the preservation of rich color, a decision that honors the stone, rather than competing with it. Every facet was placed to coax the stone into a living glow, to allow flashes of electric brilliance to play across a deep, velvety blue field. The gem was evaluated at eye level and graded eye clean, a clarity grade that assures you will see a uniformly pure surface to surface color and light performance without distractions. An excellent polish finished the transformation, creating mirror like facets that sing when the stone turns, and a consistent table that allows the vivid blue to breathe and captivate.

Like many fine blue sapphires, this gem underwent careful heat treatment to stabilize and intensify its color, an enhancement that is both common and accepted in the trade. Heat treatment for sapphires is a centuries old practice in Sri Lanka, and when done with restraint and skill it deepens blue tones without compromising durability. The C.Dunaigre certification that accompanies this piece documents the treatment, origin, weight, and measurements, and gives you transparent assurance of what you are receiving. From the mine to the hands of the cutter, to the jeweler who might set it, each step in the journey was measured by respect for the stone, and by an eye for design that seeks to honor the sapphire rather than mask it.

When you compare this vivid blue Ceylon sapphire to more commonly known gemstones, its special qualities become clear. Compared to a diamond, which excels in fire and scintillation because of a high refractive index and strong dispersion, this sapphire offers less spectral fire but compensates with a rich, saturated color and a depth that a colorless gem cannot convey. Against a ruby, which shares the corundum family and can rival sapphire in hardness, this sapphire delivers a cooler, oceanic intensity rather than ruby warmth, and its eye clean clarity makes it feel cleaner and more open in the face. Compared to tanzanite or blue topaz, which can be prized for their distinct hues but often display different levels of hardness and stability, a Ceylon sapphire offers exceptional durability for everyday wear, and a historic cultural prestige that has made Ceylon blues admired for generations. The mixed brilliant cut enhances its internal sparkle in a way that draws the eye to color first, to brilliance second, creating a living, breathing presence on the hand.

At The Natural Sapphire Company we believe that a gem is more than its measurements, it is a connection to place and people, and a choice that will live with you for a lifetime. This 3.15 carat Vivid Blue, C.Dunaigre certified, oval sapphire, with excellent polish and eye clean clarity, is ready to become the centerpiece of a ring, pendant, or bespoke design that reflects your taste and story. Consider a classic solitaire for an enduring presentation, a halo to amplify presence and contrast, or a custom setting that allows the stone to sit low for comfort while still showing off its luminous depth. We stand behind the provenance and craftsmanship of each sapphire we offer, and we are happy to advise on setting styles, metal choices, and care. To keep its color and polish, avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners if the setting includes other treatments, and store it separately to prevent abrasion. When you choose this Ceylon sapphire from The Natural Sapphire Company, you are choosing a gem with a clear lineage, expert cutting, and a visual authority that will be treasured for generations.
