This GIA certified Blue sapphire from Ceylon offered by The Natural Sapphire Company is a transparent, untreated gem weighing 3.10 carats, with precise dimensions of 10.06 by 7.99 by 4.71 mm. The oval exhibits a length to width ratio of approximately 1.26 and a crown to overall depth balance that results in a depth of roughly 52.2 percent, a proportion that preserves color saturation while maximizing face up brilliance. The cutter executed a mixed brilliant cut, combining a brilliant facet arrangement on the crown with a carefully modified pavilion geometry to enhance return of light and mitigate color zoning typical in larger stones. The faceting displays controlled table size and well aligned facet junctions, producing strong internal reflections and a lively scintillation pattern appropriate to a stone of this size and intense color intensity. Clarity is graded very slightly included evaluated at eye level, indicating only minimal internal features visible to the unaided eye that do not compromise transparency or the clean visual appearance, and the polish has been executed to an excellent standard yielding crisp facet edges and uninterrupted light flow.
Color and durability are central to the appeal of this sapphire. The hue is a pure blue with intense saturation that remains consistent across the table and crown facets, a trait enhanced by the mixed brilliant faceting which concentrates spectral return while maintaining overall balance. This gem is unenhanced, preserving natural origin characteristics associated with high quality Ceylon material, such as lively medium to medium deep tone and a bright, velvety surface color. On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, sapphire is a nine, making it one of the hardest gem materials available after diamond which is ten and significantly harder than common jewelry stones such as quartz at seven. This hardness translates into excellent resistance to surface abrasion, making the stone highly suitable for daily wear in rings and other jewelry, while its toughness is generally good though care is still required to avoid hard impacts that can cause chips. For secure daily wear we recommend settings that protect the girdle and pavilion, such as well proportioned prongs or a partial bezel, to complement the gem cutting and preserve long term performance.
