Product description

Long before a jeweler touched the wheel, deep within ancient metamorphic rock and alluvial gravels of Ceylon, a crystal of corundum began a slow and patient journey that would one day become a treasure. Heat, pressure, and time coaxed aluminum and trace elements into a lattice so hard it would resist most scratches, and the presence of iron and titanium painted the crystal a regal blue. From the riverbeds of Sri Lanka local miners learned to read the glint of bedrock and gravel, and in that practiced silence one particular rough stone was chosen for its transparency and promise. At The Natural Sapphire Company we trace each sapphire from the earth to the bench, and this 3.01 carat cushion shape blue sapphire carries the imprint of that landscape and the hands that rescued it. Its dimensions measure 9.19 by 7.13 by 4.61 millimeters, its mixed brilliant cut was chosen to balance lively sparkle with rich color, and its vivid color intensity announces itself without any enhancement, leaving the sapphire wholly natural and wholly Ceylonese.

The story continued under the gaze of master cutters who respect the personality of the rough, they saw the depths where light would play and the planes that would reveal the best blue, they carved a soft cushion outline and fashioned a mixed brilliant pavilion so light would dance from facet to facet. The result is a transparent gem that displays excellent polish and a clarity grade of very slightly included when evaluated at eye level, inclusions that attest to the stone's natural origin and become a fingerprint of authenticity rather than a flaw. Untreated and unheated, this sapphire keeps the kind of purity collectors and designers prize, its vivid blue shifting gently from royal to velvety tones as it turns, reflecting both the tropical midday sky and the shadowed pools of Sri Lankan streams. When set, the cushion shape and mixed brilliant cut create a quietly modern statement, a gemstone that narrates its own voyage from riverbed to ring, pendant, or brooch.

Durability was part of the decision to fashion this stone for everyday wear, sapphires rank a nine on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond which sits at ten, and well above common jewelry materials such as topaz at eight or quartz at seven, this high hardness means the sapphire resists scratching in daily life and holds a polished surface beautifully. Hardness is only one aspect of durability which is why the cutter left sufficient depth and a robust girdle in the final proportions, protecting the stone when it is bezel set or when prongs are carefully chosen, for a gem with very slight inclusions we recommend a secure setting and occasional professional check to keep the mounting snug. Clean this sapphire with warm soapy water and a soft brush, avoid sudden temperature shocks and harsh chemicals, and if you prefer professional cleaning discuss ultrasonic cleaning with our gem specialists since inclusions may change how a stone responds to certain treatments. At The Natural Sapphire Company we stand behind provenance and craftsmanship, offering documentation that traces this 3.01 carat, 9.19 by 7.13 by 4.61 millimeter cushion shape blue sapphire from Ceylon to your jewelry box, and we invite you to imagine wearing not just a gemstone, but a compact history of earth and human skill that will glow on the hand for generations.
