This pear shaped blue sapphire began its story deep within the ancient river gravels of Ceylon Sri Lanka, where gem bearing alluvial deposits have been worked for millennia. Hand led miners and experienced local sorters gently separated stones from the sands, following methods passed down through generations, and in doing so preserved the character that makes Ceylon sapphires so beloved. At The Natural Sapphire Company we seek out those pockets of history and geology where light and time have combined to create color, and this 2.99 carat pear shaped gem was one of those discoveries. Its transparent body and vivid color intensity speak to the unique conditions of its birthplace, where the interplay of trace elements within corundum produced a blue that is at once deep and luminous. The path from riverbank to our cutting table honors that origin story, each step chosen to respect the stone and to reveal its natural beauty.
On our cutting table the rough received careful attention from a cutter who understood both the material and the tale it carried. The gem was shaped into a classic pear, measuring approximately ten point four zero by seven point six three by four point seven six millimeters, and was faceted as a mixed brilliant cut to balance brilliance with depth. The mixed brilliant design combines a brilliant style crown with complementary pavilion facets, allowing maximum return of light while preserving color saturation and total weight. Slightly included at eye level, the stone retains a natural character that is visible only to those who look closely, and those inclusions serve as a fingerprint of origin rather than a flaw. Heat treatment was applied, a long established and stable enhancement used to deepen and even out the blue while maintaining the integrity of the gem. With an excellent polish the facets sing when moved under light, each plane cut to catch and redirect rays in a lively, sparkling dance.
To understand why this sapphire sparkles with a presence that feels unmatched, it helps to look at the crystal itself. Sapphires are corundum, a crystalline form of aluminum oxide with a compact and orderly lattice that refracts and disperses light in a way few other gems can. This crystal structure, combined with a refractive index that is higher than many common gemstones, causes light to bend and reflect within the stone rather than simply pass through. The result is a pronounced internal play of light, or brilliance, that is enhanced by the cutter through precise facet geometry. In addition this sapphire displays pleochroism, a property of many fine sapphires where different facets reveal subtly different tones of blue depending on the angle of view, adding depth and life. The mixed brilliant cut amplifies these effects by creating a symphony of small flashes and broader fields of color, so that from a distance the stone reads as a vivid blue plane, while up close it breaks into scintillating points of light and painterly shifts in hue.
Wearing this pear shaped sapphire is to carry a story of place and craft, a gem that began under Ceylon skies and was guided by human hands toward a refined final form. Its almost three carat weight, excellent polish, and vivid color intensity make it especially suited to settings where the gem can be admired from multiple angles, a solitaire pendant or an elegant drop ring being ideal. At The Natural Sapphire Company we take pride in pairing such stones with settings and designs that honor both their geological heritage and their optical brilliance, and we welcome questions about mounting options, certificates, and the care that will keep this sapphire radiant for a lifetime. If you would like to explore how this pear shaped Ceylon sapphire can be transformed into a treasured piece, we are here to guide you through every step.
