Beneath the lush hills of Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, where monsoon rains and ancient geology conspire over millennia, this blue sapphire began its journey. Deep in metamorphic rock, aluminum and trace elements crystallized under intense heat and pressure to form corundum, the mineral that becomes ruby and sapphire. Miners working long established alluvial deposits and narrow seams recovered rough stones that whispered potential, and among those, a particularly promising crystal caught the eye of our sourcing partners. The Natural Sapphire Company has long cultivated relationships with trusted miners and cutters in Sri Lanka, and this stone was selected for its pure, vivid blue that recalls the tropical skies and deep sea around the island. From the riverbeds to the sorting table, from the hands of local collectors to the careful packing and export, each step of this sapphire’s passage carried the imprint of place and people, a lineage you can feel when you hold it.
When the rough arrived at the cutting studio, master cutters studied its crystal orientation and internal features under magnification, deciding how best to bring out its color and clarity. The result is an elegant oval weighing 2.93 carats, measuring 8.81 x 6.87 x 5.61 mm, fashioned in a mixed brilliant cut that marries a brilliant cut crown with a precision faceted pavilion. Evaluated at eye level, the clarity grade reads very very slightly included, which means the stone appears clean to the naked eye while retaining microscopic characteristics that attest to its natural origin. The color intensity is vivid, a saturated blue that is at once regal and luminous, and the polish is excellent, rendering each facet crisp and reflective. As is customary for many fine Ceylon sapphires, this gem has undergone careful heat treatment to enhance its color and clarity, a widely accepted and stable enhancement that brings forward the stone’s best qualities while preserving its natural essence.
The exceptional sparkle you see in this sapphire is born of both its mineral structure and the cutter’s art. Corundum’s crystalline lattice gives the stone a relatively high refractive index, which means light entering the gem bends strongly and is more readily returned to the eye as brilliance. Though sapphires do not show the high fire of diamonds, their refractive and dispersive properties, combined with subtle birefringence and pleochroism, create dynamic flashes of deep blue and lighter azure as the stone moves. The mixed brilliant cut amplifies this effect by using a brilliant crown to break light into scintillating facets, while the meticulously angled pavilion facets channel light back through the crown in layered reflections. Each facet junction and facet angle was chosen to balance color saturation with light performance, so that internal reflections concentrate the vivid blue while bright flashes animate the surface. The excellent polish means those facets are smooth and precise, allowing light to dance cleanly without diffusion, and the very very slightly included clarity ensures that the stone maintains its visual purity under normal wear.
Seen on the finger this sapphire reads as both intimate and bold, a mineral narrative of hundreds of millions of years set into a wearable form. The oval silhouette flatters many ring designs, sitting comfortably in classic four or six prong settings or in bespoke creations that play with halo and metal contrast to emphasize the vivid blue. At The Natural Sapphire Company we present this gem with full provenance from Ceylon and with the knowledge that it was handled and finished by experienced artisans who respected its natural character. Whether chosen as an engagement center, a signature cocktail ring, or a collector’s gem, this 2.93 carat oval sapphire offers a story as rich as its color, a tangible connection between the earth, the people who bring gems to light, and the person who will wear it next. If you would like further details about cutting diagrams, mounting suggestions, or viewing options, we are ready to guide you through taking this piece from our hands into yours.
