Product description

This transparent blue sapphire presents as an elegant oval weighing 2.83 carats, with dimensions of 8.78 x 6.61 x 6.05 millimeters. The gem is fashioned in a mixed brilliant cut, engineered to balance table sparkle with depth of color. Color is classified as intense, delivering a saturated blue that remains lively across multiple lighting conditions. Clarity is assessed as very slightly included at eye level, indicating only minor internal characteristics that do not materially affect the gem predominantly when set. The surface displays an excellent polish, and the gem has undergone routine heat treatment to optimize color and clarity. The sapphire originates from Ceylon, Sri Lanka, and is offered by The Natural Sapphire Company.

The story of this sapphire begins deep within the Precambrian crust beneath what is now Sri Lanka, where processes spanning millions of years conspired to concentrate the elements necessary for corundum to form. In those ancient conditions, aluminum rich protoliths were subjected to sustained metamorphism, where elevated temperatures and pressures reorganized minerals into dense, stable assemblages. Fluids rich in trace elements migrated through fractures and shear zones, transporting titanium and iron that would later play a defining role in the stone's blue hue. Over extensive periods of time, localized pockets within metamorphic gneiss and schist acted as chemical traps, allowing corundum crystals to nucleate and grow. Subsequent tectonic uplift and erosion liberated these crystals from their host rocks, depositing many into alluvial systems. The sapphire that you see today was once locked in such deep time, its crystal lattice slowly accumulating the trace element signature that gives rise to the intense blue color observed in the finished gem.

The mixed brilliant cut applied to this oval sapphire was selected to harmonize optical performance with weight retention, preserving the gem s inherent color while producing controlled light return. This cutting style combines a step pavilion with a brilliant style crown, creating a balance between scintillation and overall brilliance. The very slightly included clarity grade reflects minor internal features that are commonly present in natural corundum, and these characteristics confirm the gem s natural origin while remaining unobtrusive during normal wear. Color in sapphire primarily results from trace amounts of iron and titanium, which interact through charge transfer processes to yield blue tones. Heat treatment, a widely accepted enhancement within the trade, was applied to this stone to stabilize and intensify that color, and to reduce the visual impact of certain inclusions. The polishing was executed to an excellent standard, delivering crisp facet junctions and a smooth surface that enhances both the gem s luster and the precision of its light performance.

When considered for jewelry, this sapphire offers dimensional versatility and confident presence. At 2.83 carats and with an oval profile of approximately 8.78 by 6.61 millimeters, the gem is well suited to a range of settings including solitaire engagement rings, halo configurations, and bespoke pendant designs. The mixed brilliant cut aids in maintaining a pleasing face up appearance while enabling secure mounting options. The Ceylon origin contributes to a known and respected gemological lineage, and the heat treatment applied is consistent with standard practices that improve visual appeal while preserving structural integrity. The Natural Sapphire Company provides this gem with detailed documentation of its attributes and provenance, and our specialists are available to advise on cut orientation, mounting options, and care instructions to ensure longevity. This sapphire embodies a synthesis of geological history, precise lapidary work, and considered enhancement, resulting in a stone that combines natural heritage with practical adaptability for fine jewelry.
