Product description

This transparent 2.46 carat oval blue sapphire presents a disciplined balance of size and presence, with dimensions of 9.04 by 7.04 by 4.41 millimeters. The gem is fashioned with a mixed brilliant cut, combining a faceted crown that promotes strong return of light with a pavilion that supports depth of color. Clarity is graded as very slightly included when evaluated at eye level, and the surface finish is described as excellent polish. Color intensity is intense, and the material has been heat treated to stabilize and enhance the blue tone. The origin of this sapphire is Ceylon in Sri Lanka, and The Natural Sapphire Company provides the accompanying provenance and assessment details for reference and verification.

The exceptional sparkle of this sapphire is fundamentally a consequence of its crystal structure and optical attributes. Sapphires are a gem variety of corundum, a material composed of aluminum oxide, and that dense, tightly bonded lattice produces a relatively high refractive index. That higher refractive index increases the degree to which light is bent and retained within the stone before it exits, creating strong internal reflections and lively return of light to the eye. In addition the anisotropic character of corundum gives the sapphire a modest degree of birefringence and pleochroism, permitting subtle shifts in tone and saturation when the stone is viewed from different angles. Those internal optical effects enhance the perception of scintillation and depth, so that light entering the gem can be captured, redirected, and emitted as a dynamic pattern of brilliance and flashes of intense blue. Although sapphires typically show lower dispersion than diamonds and therefore less spectral fire, the combination of high refractive index, directional color response, and clean material produces a type of sparkle that reads as intense and saturated rather than as a scattering of spectral colors.

The mixed brilliant cut of this piece is critical to translating the inherent optical potential of the material into perceived sparkle that is uncommon among other gem types. The faceting scheme places well proportioned brilliant facets on the crown to maximize point source scintillation as the gem moves, while the pavilion facets are arranged to enhance light retention and convey color across the table. The oval outline further contributes by elongating the optical path and allowing the blue to display consistently across the face, rather than concentrating tone in a single area. The excellent polish increases surface reflectivity, reducing light loss at every facet junction and maintaining crisp, high contrast facet junctions that the eye reads as lively flash. The very slightly included clarity grade ensures that most of the light paths remain unobstructed at normal viewing distances, preserving both brilliance and transparency. The applied heat treatment is a commonly accepted enhancement that refines body tone and improves the evenness of saturation, working with the cut and polish to offer a stable, vivid appearance. Taken together these factors explain why this 2.46 carat Ceylon sapphire produces a type of sparkle that is structured, deep, and resolutely blue, a quality The Natural Sapphire Company documents and presents with clear specification and measured grading.
