This transparent 2.38 carat oval blue sapphire, presented by The Natural Sapphire Company, measures 9.56 x 7.07 x 3.81 mm and is cut in an oval mixed brilliant design. The stone is heat treated, originates from Ceylon Sri Lanka, and displays a medium color intensity with a clarity grade recorded as very very slightly included when evaluated at eye level. The mixed brilliant faceting combines a brilliant crown with carefully arranged pavilion facets, and an excellent polish ensures that facet junctions are smooth and reflective. These characteristics yield an eye clean appearance, consistent tone across the table, and strong light return, qualities that make this sapphire suitable for fine jewelry where measured color and refined proportions are priorities.
The sapphire derives its distinctive sparkle from its intrinsic corundum structure and the precision of the mixed brilliant cut. Corundum has a relatively high refractive index, approximately 1.76, which causes light to bend and reflect internally before emerging as bright flashes. Sapphires also exhibit pleochroism, a directional variation of color, which in this material enhances facet contrast as the stone moves, producing a lively interplay between intense blue flashes and deeper violet blue areas. The mixed brilliant layout maximizes these effects by pairing a brilliant crown, which generates scintillation and pinpoint flashes of light, with a pavilion geometry that promotes strong internal reflection and contrast patterning. Excellent polish minimizes light leakage at facet interfaces, preserving the clarity of individual flashes and maintaining crisp, high contrast scintillation. Heat treatment has optimized the stone’s color saturation and reduced the visibility of minor inclusions, allowing light to travel through the stone with minimal obstruction. The result is a sapphire whose optical behavior, arising from its crystal chemistry, cutting geometry, and finish, produces a sparkle that is distinctive and particularly vivid among colored gemstones.
