Product description

This exceptional Ceylon blue sapphire offered by The Natural Sapphire Company is a transparent cushion shaped gemstone weighing 2.07 carats, with exact dimensions of 7.86 by 6.63 by 4.57 millimeters. The stone is cut in a mixed brilliant configuration, combining a faceted brilliant style crown with a precision oriented pavilion faceting scheme, yielding a classic cushion silhouette with modern optical performance. Clarity is graded as very very slightly included at eye level, indicating minimal internal features that do not interfere with overall transparency or light transmission. Color is described as vivid intensity, and the piece has an excellent polish, attributes that together present a visually saturated blue with strong internal life. The sapphire has undergone controlled heat treatment to optimize color and clarity, a standard and stable enhancement for Sri Lankan sapphires, and its documented origin of Ceylon situates it within a long lineage of highly prized blue corundum material.

At its core the gem is corundum, an aluminum oxide crystal with a refractive index range of approximately 1.762 to 1.770, and a low birefringence in the order of 0.008 to 0.010. These intrinsic physical constants are central to the stone s optical behavior, because the relatively high refractive index facilitates strong internal reflection and the modest birefringence supports crisp facet contrast without excessive doubling of facet edges. Color in blue sapphires arises from intervalence charge transfer between iron and titanium ions, and in this specimen that mechanism produces a vivid blue that reads strongly across the crown and through the pavilion. The sapphire s inherent pleochroism is evident on rotation, manifesting as a range from medium blue to slightly deeper violet blue along different crystallographic axes, a property that the cutter leveraged to orient the pavilion and crown such that the most desirable color is presented face up.

The mixed brilliant cut executed on this cushion is a decisive contributor to the stone s unmatched sparkle. The cutter employed a brilliant style crown with a moderately sized table and well proportioned bezel and star facets, to create numerous small reflective planes that break light into lively scintillation. The pavilion is organized to complement the crown, using a sequence of step and kite facets to trap and redirect light back through the crown for maximum return rather than leakage. The measured depth of four point fifty seven millimeters relative to the average diameter of seven point two four five millimeters yields a depth proportion of approximately sixty three percent, a balance that preserves body color while enabling a pleasing optical pavilion angle for return and contrast. Facet junctions are tight and the excellent polish minimizes surface scattering, so light interacting with the high refractive index material produces crisp flashes of white light and saturated blue flashes, a combination of brilliance and color scintillation that is more intense than in many single style cuts.

Clarity and internal structure also play a nuanced role in the stone s light performance. The very very slightly included grade at eye level denotes that any inclusions are minute and sparse, often limited to negligible crystals or fine silk that remain undetectable without magnification in normal viewing, and these inclusions can subtly enhance pinfire scintillation by introducing controlled micro scattering centers without compromising transparency. The heat treatment has reduced color zoning and improved diffusion of chromophores, producing a uniform vivid hue across the table and facets, while the excellent polish and symmetry ensure consistent optical behavior as the gem is rotated under light. Taken together the crystal chemistry of corundum, the Ti Fe charge transfer chromophore system, the optimized mixed brilliant facet architecture, the ideal depth proportion, and the superior finish converge to give this cushion sapphire a sparkle that is distinguished by its combination of intense color saturation, sharp facet contrast, and abundant, well defined scintillation.

For buyers who appreciate technical refinement and provenance, this Ceylon sapphire represents a precise intersection of geology and lapidary craft, offered through The Natural Sapphire Company with full disclosure of enhancement and origin. The stone s dimensions and mixed brilliant faceting make it well suited to a setting that exposes the pavilion to light while protecting the girdle, such as a halo or open gallery design in platinum or neutral white gold for maximum color contrast, or a warm yellow gold mounting to increase perceived saturation depending on design intent. Please contact The Natural Sapphire Company for additional top light and side light imagery, precise facet diagrams, or assistance in selecting a setting that will optimize the interaction between this sapphire s internal structure and external light sources, we are available to provide lapidary level detail and mounting recommendations to ensure the gem s intrinsic sparkle is fully realized in the finished jewel.
