Product description

This 2.04 carat cushion shape greyish blue sapphire presents a clear and measured expression of natural corundum, offered and described by The Natural Sapphire Company. The gem measures 7.34 by 7.24 by 4.09 mm, and carries a mixed brilliant cut that harmonizes step and brilliant faceting to balance depth, scintillation, and color distribution. Clarity is graded as very slightly included when evaluated at eye level, a practical assessment that reflects small internal characteristics visible only under close inspection that do not compromise the visual integrity of the stone. The color displays a medium intensity, a restrained and versatile greyish blue tone that reads as both contemporary and classic depending on light and setting. The surface finish is an excellent polish, and the stone has undergone a standard, stable heat treatment to refine and stabilize its color. Origin is documented as Tanzania, and the presentation of this sapphire includes the professional grading and provenance information maintained by The Natural Sapphire Company.

The story of this sapphire began millions of years ago within the dynamic crust of the Earth, where aluminum rich rocks met conditions of elevated temperature and pressure to form corundum crystals. In regions that now constitute parts of Tanzania, geological processes produced situational environments conducive to corundum growth, including metamorphism of aluminous protoliths and interaction with silica deficient fluids. Minute amounts of trace elements such as iron and titanium became incorporated into the corundum lattice as it crystallized, producing the greyish blue hue observed today. Over geologic time the host rocks were uplifted, fractured, and exposed to weathering. Erosion liberated crystals from their primary matrix, and rivers and alluvial systems transported and concentrated them in sediments, where the most gem quality material accumulated. The internal features described by the clarity grade record aspects of that formation and transport history, including minute mineral inclusions and growth zoning that can reveal the conditions of crystallization. The subsequent discovery and recovery of this material in Tanzania is part of a long natural sequence that transformed submicroscopic chemical processes and regional tectonics into the transparent gem that is now faceted.

The decision to cut this crystal into a 2.04 carat cushion shape with a mixed brilliant facet scheme responds directly to the stone’s optical and physical characteristics, and to the objective of maximizing the natural color and light return while retaining weight and integrity. The cushion outline offers a balance between classic proportions and contemporary presence, and the mixed brilliant arrangement combines a pavilion of modified brilliant facets with a crown that can include step elements to enhance color and depth. The dimensions, 7.34 by 7.24 by 4.09 mm, produce a pleasing table to depth relationship that supports both face up appearance and durability for everyday wear. Heat treatment, a widely accepted and historically practiced enhancement for sapphires, was applied to refine the greyish blue tone and to improve color uniformity, while leaving the underlying crystal structure intact. The excellent polish enhances return of light from the facets and contributes to the perceived clarity and brilliance. As corundum, this sapphire retains a high degree of hardness and resistance to abrasion, making it suitable for a range of jewelry applications where long term stability and performance are required. The Natural Sapphire Company provides this technical description and provenance so that the gem may be understood in geological, gemological, and practical terms.
