Product description

This cushion shape blue sapphire weighs 1.80 carat, and measures 7.20 by 6.54 by 4.20 mm, with a mixed brilliant cut that balances pavilion depth and crown facets to maximize brilliance and color. The stone is transparent, with a clarity grade described as eye clean evaluated at eye level, and a vivid color intensity that presents a strong, saturated blue across the table and through the crown. The polish is excellent, presenting crisp facet junctions and a lively surface finish that enhances light return. The gem has undergone heat treated enhancement, a widely accepted and stable treatment that deepens tone and refines color uniformity. Sourced from Ceylon, Sri Lanka, this sapphire carries the geological and cultural lineage associated with that historic gem producing region, and it is offered with full disclosure by The Natural Sapphire Company.

The narrative of this sapphire begins deep within the continental crust, where millions of years of tectonic activity created the high pressure and temperature conditions necessary for corundum to crystallize. In an aluminum rich and silica poor environment within metamorphic host rocks such as gneiss and marble, aluminum and oxygen atoms slowly arranged into the dense hexagonal lattice of corundum. Trace elements such as iron and titanium became incorporated into the growing crystal lattice in minute concentrations, and their interaction under geological conditions produced the characteristic blue hue through intervalence charge transfer. Over geologic time the region underwent cycles of uplift and erosion, exposing primary metamorphic terrains to surface processes. As rain and rivers wore down the bedrock, individual corundum crystals were liberated and carried into stream channels, where the density and hardness of corundum allowed selective concentration in alluvial gravels. This long history of formation and transport explains both the robustness of the crystal and the consistent, saturated color that many Sri Lankan sapphires display.

After recovery, this particular crystal was evaluated and prepared for cutting with attention to preserving the best natural color and clarity. The mixed brilliant cut cushion shape was chosen to marry the stone proportions with the internal light performance, producing scintillation and maintaining color saturation through intentional pavilion angles and crown facets. The eye clean clarity grade means that at normal viewing distances the stone shows no inclusions that appreciably affect transparency or light transmission, and the excellent polish delivers sharp facet planes that aid both brilliance and luster. The heat treated enhancement was applied in a controlled manner to mature the internal color and to reduce localized zoning, a standard practice in the trade that enhances the visual appeal while remaining stable under normal wear. As with all pieces handled by The Natural Sapphire Company, provenance from Ceylon, Sri Lanka, detailed specifications, and full disclosure of treatment are provided to allow confident selection for fine jewelry settings, bespoke designs, or investment collections, and the stone is suited to a range of settings where its vivid color and balanced proportions can be showcased.
