The narrative of this sapphire begins deep within the continental crust, where millions of years of tectonic activity created the high pressure and temperature conditions necessary for corundum to crystallize. In an aluminum rich and silica poor environment within metamorphic host rocks such as gneiss and marble, aluminum and oxygen atoms slowly arranged into the dense hexagonal lattice of corundum. Trace elements such as iron and titanium became incorporated into the growing crystal lattice in minute concentrations, and their interaction under geological conditions produced the characteristic blue hue through intervalence charge transfer. Over geologic time the region underwent cycles of uplift and erosion, exposing primary metamorphic terrains to surface processes.
