Product description

This transparent 1.18 carat cushion shape bluish green sapphire presents a refined balance of color and form, with dimensions of 5.61 by 5.46 by 4.18 mm, a mixed brilliant cut, and a clarity grade described as very slightly included when evaluated at eye level. The color displays a light intensity that leans toward a cool, green tipped blue, and the surface shows an excellent polish that enhances the stone presence without masking its natural character. This sapphire is free of enhancement, a detail that speaks to the integrity of its original formation and subsequent treatment, and it is documented as originating in Montana. At The Natural Sapphire Company we document these characteristics precisely, and we make this information available to support an informed appreciation of the gem and its qualities.

The story of this sapphire begins deep in the crust of the earth, millions of years ago, where aluminum rich environments underwent profound physical and chemical change. Corundum, the mineral species to which sapphires belong, forms under conditions of elevated temperature and pressure, typically within metamorphic host rocks such as mica schist or within basaltic systems where late stage fluids can concentrate aluminum and drive crystallization. In this example, trace amounts of iron and titanium were incorporated into the corundum lattice during growth, shifting the optical absorption and yielding the bluish green hue observed today. Growth occurred slowly enough that a well defined crystal lattice developed, permitting the high transparency and the presence of only very slight inclusions when observed at eye level. Over geological timeframes the original host rock underwent additional tectonic forces, partial recrystallization, and fluid interactions that further influenced the crystal habit and the distribution of trace elements within the corundum matrix.

Following its formation, the sapphire experienced a prolonged history of burial, uplift, and erosion, a sequence that ultimately delivered this gem to the surface environment of what is now Montana. Regional uplift exposed the rocks to erosion, releasing individual corundum crystals from their primary host and allowing rivers and streams to transport and concentrate them in secondary deposits. These placer environments create natural sorting mechanisms that both clean the crystal surfaces and bring higher quality material together in gravel bars and alluvial fans. The Montana provenance is significant, as local geological processes and source rocks contribute to a characteristic range of color and crystal habit among sapphires from the region. The absence of enhancement on this stone reflects its stable color and clarity as recovered from these natural deposits, and it is consistent with the careful, documented sourcing practices that The Natural Sapphire Company adheres to when presenting stones from historic and modern Montana workings.

Once recovered, the rough crystal that produced this cushion shaped sapphire was evaluated and shaped to optimize the balance between weight retention and optical performance, resulting in a mixed brilliant cut that unites a faceted crown designed for scintillation with a pavilion geometry that returns light efficiently to the viewer. The finished dimensions of 5.61 by 5.46 by 4.18 mm and the 1.18 carat weight are the result of deliberate planning by experienced cutters, taking into account the original crystal orientation, internal clarity features, and the desire to present the natural color without artificial enhancement. The very slightly included clarity grade at eye level indicates that the stone offers transparency and visual purity under normal viewing conditions, while still bearing the subtle hallmarks of natural formation. The excellent polish contributes to crisp facet junctions and clean light performance, and the light color intensity lends the sapphire a versatile quality suitable for a range of jewelry designs. The Natural Sapphire Company documents each of these attributes so that the gem can be understood in geological, gemological, and practical terms, thereby supporting a thoughtful selection process and ensuring that the history and integrity of the stone are communicated clearly.
