This transparent 1.02 carat oval blue sapphire from Ceylon offered by The Natural Sapphire Company measures 6.72 x 5.72 x 3.51 mm, and is fashioned in a mixed brilliant cut with an excellent polish. The stone exhibits medium color intensity, a clarity grade of very slightly included as evaluated at eye level, and no enhancement. The mixed brilliant cut combines a faceting scheme that balances strong face up color with lively scintillation, allowing light to enter through the table and return efficiently via the pavilion facets. At this size and depth the stone presents a crisp table, well defined facet junctions, and a bright, even distribution of blue that reads as fresh and lively in daylight and artificial light. Clarity characteristics are minimal to the unaided eye, so transparency and light transmission remain high, supporting clean internal reflections and distinct facet contrast.
When compared to other gemstones in its category this Ceylon sapphire demonstrates a characteristic balance between color and reflection that distinguishes Sri Lankan material. Versus Kashmir sapphires, which are often admired for their velvety saturation and softer, more diffuse reflections, this Ceylon example offers a brighter, more energetic return of light and a slightly lighter tone. Versus Burmese material, which can show deeper saturation and intense color concentration with strong but less sparkling reflections, the Ceylon stone delivers greater scintillation and a more open, lively appearance. Compared with other blue gem species such as tanzanite, spinel, and aquamarine, corundum has a higher refractive index near 1.76, which yields stronger brilliance and crisper facet reflections. Tanzanite displays trichroic color shifts and a softer sheen, spinel can offer excellent sparkle but usually lacks the same depth of blue, and aquamarine tends to have lower brilliance owing to a lower refractive index. This untreated Ceylon sapphire therefore occupies a desirable optical niche, combining the robust reflective qualities of corundum with the lighter, lively character typical of Sri Lankan stones.
