Product description

One beautiful transparent 0.88 carat oval shape bluish purple sapphire is presented with dimensions of 6.87 by 4.63 by 3.45 mm, originating from Madagascar, offered by The Natural Sapphire Company. The gem displays an intense color intensity that reads as a true bluish purple in daylight and under standard gemological illumination, and it carries a clarity grade of slightly included when evaluated at eye level. The cutting style is a mixed brilliant cut, selected to balance optimal light performance with color saturation in this modestly scaled oval outline, and the finish is an excellent polish that produces clean facet junctions and crisp facet reflections. The stone has been heat treated, a standard and stable enhancement for corundum that deepens hue and reduces some types of inclusions without compromising hardness or long term stability. This precise specification is intended for the discerning buyer who values technical detail, and the listing includes documentation of origin and treatment to support clarity and provenance.

The mixed brilliant cut on this oval has been executed to marry the high scintillation characteristics of brilliant faceting with controlled color distribution achieved through modified crown geometry, the pavilion employing a brilliant facet arrangement to maximize returning light, and the crown tailored to moderate table size and crown angles to retain intense color while promoting sparkle. Corundum has a refractive index around 1.762 to 1.770, which is lower than diamond, and dispersion near 0.018, which means fire will be subdued compared with diamond, however the mixed brilliant design enhances contrast and scintillation so that the eye perceives lively movement and flash across the oval surface. The oval outline, with its length to width ratio, creates a spectrum of light return along the shoulders and ends, and the faceting symmetry and excellent polish optimize internal reflection paths, reducing light leakage and increasing apparent brilliance relative to poorly cut sapphires. The result is a stone that, while not matching diamond in fire, offers intense scintillation and strong facet definition, producing a brilliance that is decisive for corundum and superior to many commercial cuts of more common colored gemstones.

Color analysis of this bluish purple sapphire highlights its intense saturation and balanced tone, attributes that set it apart from more common gems such as commercial blue topaz or amethyst. While blue topaz can present bright blue tones with lighter saturation, and amethyst can carry strong purple but often in a cooler spectrum, this Madagascar sapphire unites blue and purple in a depth of color that reads as both vivid and complex. Corundum exhibits pleochroism, and in this oval the cutter oriented the pavilion to present the most attractive combination of blue and purple from the face up position, minimizing undesirable color zoning and reinforcing uniformity across the table. Heat treatment in this instance has been applied to enhance chromophore distribution and to relax certain inclusions, producing a stable, durable color that will not fade under normal wear. Compared with tanzanite, which can show stronger pleochroic shifts and a softer hardness profile, this sapphire combines long term stability with intense color, and compared with spinel, the sapphire benefits from a higher refractive index and stronger scintillation when well cut, which is achieved here through careful facet placement and polish.

Clarity considerations for this slightly included sapphire are technical and practical, inclusions typical to Madagascar sapphire such as fine rutile needles or small crystal inclusions are present at magnification and are positioned so that they do not disrupt the primary face up presentation, and at eye level the stone reads as clean enough to maintain uninterrupted color and light return. Slightly included grading indicates a balance between natural character and visual appeal, and those inclusions can also act as fingerprints of natural origin, useful to the experienced collector who values traceable features. Given corundum hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, the gem is highly suitable for everyday wear, and the excellent polish and robust proportions reduce the risk of surface abrasion and chipping when set. For mounting recommendations, a protective bezel or secure prong setting that supports the shoulders will preserve the oval outline and maintain facet integrity, while a well engineered setting will allow optimal light entry to preserve the mixed brilliant effect. The Natural Sapphire Company stands behind this Madagascar sapphire with full disclosure of treatment and origin, and we can provide supplementary images and viewing angles under different lighting to demonstrate pleochroic behavior, cut angles, and inclusion map upon request.
