Product description

This blue sapphire began its life deep within the metamorphic rock of Ceylon Sri Lanka, where heat and pressure coaxed aluminum and trace chromium into a crystalline form that has captivated civilizations for millennia. The rough was discovered by skilled miners in Ratnapura, a region known for producing some of the world s most celebrated sapphires, and it traveled through careful hands to the workshop where tradition and precision meet. At The Natural Sapphire Company we honor that journey, selecting only material with natural beauty and integrity, and this particular stone retained its natural character without any enhancement, a quality that immediately marks it as rare. Weighing 0.87 carat and measuring 6.44 x 4.58 x 3.62 mm, the oval shape was chosen to echo centuries of classic jewelry design, while the mixed brilliant cut was applied to maximize light return and lively scintillation. Evaluated at eye level the stone is very slightly included, a clarity that allows the gem to breathe and display its medium intense blue with a purity that is both honest and captivating. The polish is excellent, lending glass like surfaces that catch light without obstruction, and the untreated origin of Ceylon Sri Lanka gives the color a natural, maritime clarity that collectors and wearers consistently prize.

When you hold this sapphire you can sense its kinship with some of the most famous gems in history, without confusing it with their unique stories. Ceylon sapphires have been treasured by monarchs and merchants alike for centuries, and they share a lineage with notable gems such as the Star of India and the Logan Sapphire that once graced royal and museum collections. The Star of India is famed for its size and star phenomenon, and the Logan Sapphire for its monumental presence, both of which highlight Sri Lanka s reputation as a source of remarkable material. By contrast the Kashmir sapphires of the 19th and 20th centuries are often celebrated for their velvety cornflower blues and extraordinarily saturated tones. Our 0.87 carat example carries a different kind of appeal, it offers a medium intense color that is vivid without being heavy, a brightness that reads beautifully in daylight and artificial light alike. The mixed brilliant cut gives it a fire that evokes the scintillation of high quality sapphires in historic jewelry, while the very slightly included clarity assures an open window into the stone, unlike some heavily included specimens that mask their color. The fact that it is untreated elevates its provenance, because many commercially available sapphires receive heat treatment to enhance color and clarity, but this sapphire presents its original state as the earth created it, a direct connection to Ceylon s ancient gem bearing soils.

In the workshop our master cutters and polishers coaxed this small rough into a jewel that balances history with modern wearability. The oval silhouette lends itself to a variety of settings, from a solitary engagement ring that speaks of refined understatement, to a halo design that amplifies presence, to a pendant that captures light with every movement. Imagine it set in a classic platinum mounting, where its medium intense blue will sing against cool metal, or in a warm gold that plays up its slightly tropical Ceylon personality. As a salesperson and gem enthusiast I often compare the emotional value of such a sapphire to the storied gemstones that have adorned sovereigns, because wearing an untreated Ceylon sapphire is to wear a piece of geological and cultural history, scaled for everyday elegance. At The Natural Sapphire Company we accompany each stone with documentation of origin and our appraisal of its qualities, and we stand behind the integrity of its untreated status and excellent polish. If you are seeking a gemstone that unites responsible sourcing, a lively medium intense blue, meticulous cutting, and the unaltered beauty of Ceylon Sri Lanka, this 0.87 carat oval sapphire offers a rare opportunity to own a jewel with both tangible craftsmanship and a narrative that reaches back to the very formation of the gem.
