Product description

From the ancient highlands of Ceylon Sri Lanka, where monsoon winds and timeworn rivers have quietly carved pathways through gem bearing gravels, this bluish green sapphire began its long journey. Deep within those alluvial beds, corundum crystals form slowly as aluminium and oxygen arrange themselves into a hard, resilient lattice. Generations of miners in Sri Lanka learned to read the rivers and find these hidden pockets, and from one such pocket came the rough that would become this delicate pear shaped treasure. The island has given sapphires to kings and pilgrims alike, and the quiet provenance of this stone carries that same sense of history and reverence. At The Natural Sapphire Company we honor that story, and we share it so that when you hold this sapphire you feel connected to the land and the hands that first uncovered it.

The transformation from raw crystal to the polished 0.52 carat gem you see began with careful study and a decision to preserve the stone’s natural beauty. The cutter saw in the rough the potential for a pear shape, a form that echoes raindrops and leaves and mirrors the gentle curvature of the natural world. The finished dimensions of this stone measure 6.14 by 4.80 by 2.49 millimeters, small enough to sit elegantly on a delicate ring, and large enough to show a lively personality. The color reads as bluish green with medium color intensity, and the transparency allows light to travel freely through the gem. No enhancement was applied, so what you see is the stone’s true nature. The clarity is described as very very slightly included evaluated at eye level, a grade that means the jewel is remarkably clean to the unaided eye, while still retaining the tiny, telling features that confirm its authenticity as a natural sapphire.

The cutter chose a mixed brilliant cut to coax the best of both worlds from this material, combining the scintillating facets of a brilliant style with the depth and clarity that step facets provide. The mixed brilliant arrangement creates a lively play of light across the gem, with bright flashes from the crown and a rich, layered glow from the pavilion. The excellent polish amplifies each facet transition so that every movement produces a new flash, and the pear shape adds directional sparkle that seems to gather light toward the tip before releasing it in a soft flare. Because the stone is transparent and has very very slight inclusions, the path of light remains largely unobstructed, which enhances both brilliance and fire. This careful marriage of cut, clarity, and polish is what separates a well cut gem from an ordinary one, and it is the result of experienced hands shaping the stone with respect for its natural lines.

At the heart of this sapphire’s exceptional sparkle lies the crystal structure of corundum and the optical science that follows from it. Corundum forms in a trigonal lattice that gives sapphires a high refractive index, about 1.76, so light bends strongly when it enters and exits the stone. That strong bending produces intense internal reflection, which is the bedrock of brilliance. Sapphires also display pleochroism, meaning the gem shows different hues when viewed from different angles, and in this bluish green example that behavior contributes to the gem’s shifting, living color. The gem’s dispersion, though modest compared with diamond, is enough to break light into subtle flashes of spectral color when cut with care. The mixed brilliant cut leverages these properties by placing facets at angles that maximize internal reflection and return light through the crown, while the long pear silhouette creates scintillation that dances with even the smallest gestures. The result is a sparkle that feels both crystalline and organic, a light that seems to come from within rather than merely bouncing off the surface.

When you bring this sapphire into a design, whether as the centerpiece of a bespoke ring or as a refined accent in a pendant, you are continuing its journey from Ceylon’s rivers to something personal and wearable. The stone’s size and shape lend themselves to elegant settings that protect the pointed end and showcase the symmetry of the pear cut. Paired with warm metals a bluish green sapphire can feel intimate and lush, paired with white metals it can read crisp and contemporary. At The Natural Sapphire Company we can advise on settings that respect the gem’s proportions and accentuate its natural sparkle. Owning a natural, untreated sapphire means carrying a piece of geological time and human care together, and it means wearing a gem whose beauty is honest and unaltered. If you desire a stone with provenance, personality, and a light that moves with you, this pear shaped Ceylon sapphire offers all of that in a compact and unforgettable form.
