This 0.47 carat oval blue sapphire is cut to maximize light performance, the mixed brilliant cut combining a brilliant facet arrangement on the crown with a stepped pavilion geometry. The crown facets act as primary light collectors, dispersing incoming light across multiple small facet planes, while the pavilion and culet zones provide controlled internal reflection pathways. Together these elements create a balance between scintillation and depth, enabling rapid return of light to the viewer as bright flashes and lively sparkle. The corundum structure of sapphire, with a refractive index near 1.76, supports efficient refraction and internal reflection, concentrating light within the gem and producing a level of brilliance that is distinguished from many other gem materials. The excellent polish of this stone sharpens facet junctions and increases mirror like surfaces, enhancing contrast and making each return of light appear crisper and more vivid.
Measured at 5.43 x 4.14 x 2.50 mm, the transparent oval presents a vivid blue color intensity and a clarity grade recorded as very slightly included at eye level, indicating minor natural features that do not materially interrupt light flow or visual appeal. The piece originates from Ceylon Sri Lanka, a provenance known for saturated and luminous blue tones, and has undergone standard heat treatment to stabilize and enhance color and clarity, a common and permanent enhancement for sapphire. The combined effect of precise mixed brilliant cutting, the inherent optical properties of corundum, vivid color saturation, and an excellent polish results in a balanced interplay of fire, contrast, and depth. Presented by The Natural Sapphire Company, this sapphire is suitable for a variety of fine jewellery settings where its compact dimensions and intense sparkle will be showcased effectively, whether as a refined single stone in a classic mounting or as the centerpiece paired with complementary accents.
