Long before it reached the surface and the hands of a cutter, this bluish green sapphire began its story deep within the crust of what is now Montana, where regional metamorphism and locally high temperature hydrothermal activity reorganized aluminum rich sediments and volcanic protoliths into crystalline corundum millions of years ago. Slow, episodic growth produced a compact crystal lattice, and trace concentrations of iron together with vanishingly small amounts of other transition metals imparted the bluish green hue that we observe today. Growth zoning and minute needle like and crystal inclusions were trapped as the crystal advanced, recording changes in chemistry and pressure that occurred over geological time. Subsequent uplift and erosional processes liberated the sapphire from its host rock, concentrating it in alluvial deposits where weathering rounded rough surfaces and natural abrasion prepared the rough form for human refinement. The present gem, evaluated as very very slightly included at the eye level, preserves those microscopic features as a fingerprint of its origin, and it was later stabilized and color enhanced through controlled heat treatment to intensify its tone and improve apparent clarity without altering its natural identity.
As a finished gem this 0.37 carat oval shape sapphire measures 5.00 millimeters by 3.73 millimeters by 2.51 millimeters, and it exemplifies deliberate lapidary decision making. The mixed brilliant cut employs a brilliant facet arrangement on the crown to maximize scintillation and a modified pavilion scheme to balance color saturation with light return, a choice that is particularly effective for sapphires with intense color intensity. The cutter oriented the long axis to the crystal habit to retain weight and to display even color distribution across the table, while maintaining proportional girdle thickness and symmetry to facilitate secure mounting. An excellent polish enhances facet junction crispness and optimizes surface reflection, allowing the bluish green to present lively flashes and stable saturation under varied lighting. This stone is heat treated, a standard enhancement that improves color and reduces the visual impact of inclusions, and its very very slightly included clarity grade confirms that the stone remains highly transparent and collectible. The Natural Sapphire Company offers this gem as a technical example of Montana sapphire character, combining geological provenance, precise cutting, and professional finishing for discerning buyers who value documented origin and refined craftsmanship.
