Born deep within the Precambrian metamorphic terranes that underlie Ceylon, this orangish yellow sapphire traces its origin to processes that spanned millions of years. Under sustained high temperature and pressure, aluminum rich protoliths underwent recrystallization, concentrating corundum nuclei in narrow, metasomatized zones and in subsequent alluvial placers. Trace iron, substituted into the corundum lattice, is primarily responsible for the yellow to orange register of color, with localized charge transfer interactions modulating hue and saturation. Over geological time, repeated cycles of metamorphism and weathering liberated these crystals, allowing them to be transported and rounded by fluvial action before eventual recovery, and the present gem preserves both the internal growth texture and the chemical fingerprint of its Sri Lankan genesis.
Cut and finish are executed to exacting standards to translate that geological history into visual performance. This specimen is a 3.21 carat cushion shape, measuring 8.09 x 7.82 x 5.82 mm, faceted as a mixed brilliant cut to marry scintillation with color delivery. The crown exhibits a modified brilliant facet array that disperses light, while the pavilion architecture combines a series of faceted planes designed to optimize internal reflection and return. Table proportion and pavilion depth have been balanced to emphasize vivid color intensity while preserving lively brilliance, the result being strong faceted contrast and even face up color. Clarity is graded eye clean at standard viewing distance, allowing unobstructed light transmission, and polish is excellent, producing crisp facet junctions and mirror like facet planes. The stone has been heat treated to enhance color uniformity and stability, a common and accepted enhancement in Ceylon sapphires, applied with controlled thermal protocols to preserve natural inclusions and structure.
Presented by The Natural Sapphire Company this sapphire is specified for both connoisseurs and designers who require technical exactness. Corundum hardness of nine on the Mohs scale ensures durability for daily wear, and the gemological proportions favor secure bezel or prong settings without compromising optical performance. For settings that emphasize the warm orangish yellow, consider warm metals to complement the vivid hue, or a halo of smaller white sapphires to amplify scintillation. Our team can provide mounting recommendations and cut analysis to ensure that this Ceylon sapphire performs as intended in finished jewelry, honoring both its deep time formation and the precision cutting that reveals its full potential.
