This gemstone is a transparent yellow sapphire of 2.54 carat, presented in a cushion shape with dimensions of 8.28 x 5.90 x 5.08 mm, faceted in a mixed brilliant cut. Its color displays a medium intensity that reads evenly across the table, and its clarity is graded as very slightly included when evaluated at eye level. The polish has been assessed as excellent, and the stone is natural with no enhancement. Its origin is Ceylon, Sri Lanka, and this example is offered and documented by The Natural Sapphire Company.
The formation of this sapphire began deep within the earth millions of years ago, in an environment defined by high pressure, elevated temperatures, and an abundance of aluminum in a relatively silica poor matrix. Corundum, the mineral species that yields sapphires, crystallizes under these conditions when aluminum oxides are concentrated and other elements that would form silica rich minerals are scarce. Over extended geological time scales, incremental changes in temperature and pressure, along with fluctuating fluid chemistry, permitted the slow and ordered growth of corundum crystals. Trace amounts of iron became incorporated into the crystal lattice during this growth, producing selective absorption of certain wavelengths of light and giving the crystal its characteristic yellow hue. The result is a structurally robust, well formed corundum crystal whose color and internal character record the particular conditions of its birth.
After the sapphires crystallized, the region that would become modern day Sri Lanka underwent uplift and erosion, processes that liberated gem bearing corundum from their primary metamorphic hosts. In Sri Lanka these hosts are commonly high grade metamorphic rocks including marbles and gneisses, where pockets of aluminum enrichment and fluid activity concentrated gem quality corundum. Weathering and transport freed the crystals and carried them into river systems where they accumulated in alluvial gravels. Over successive cycles of flooding and deposition, the heavier corundum grains settled and became concentrated in placer deposits that are characteristic of Ceylon gem bearing terrains. Skilled miners and local field sorters recovered these crystals from river gravels and residual deposits, selecting pieces that exhibited promising color, size, and transparency. Once selected, the rough crystal that produced this 2.54 carat cushion was carefully evaluated for cutting potential, then fashioned with a mixed brilliant facet scheme to balance optical performance and weight retention.
The cutting choice and finishing work on this sapphire enhance its inherent qualities while respecting its natural origin. The cushion outline gives a classic, restrained face up that presents the medium yellow color with clarity, while the mixed brilliant cut generates measured scintillation and return of light. The clarity grading of very slightly included at eye level indicates that the stone is essentially clean to casual viewing, with only minor inclusions that are consistent with natural growth and transport histories, and that do not detract from its overall appearance. The excellent polish maximizes surface reflection and ensures clean facet junctions, contributing to crisp light return and a refined presentation. With no enhancement, the color and transparency are wholly natural, and the documented provenance from Ceylon Sri Lanka provides additional context for its geological and geographical history. The Natural Sapphire Company maintains detailed records for this gemstone and offers it as a natural, untreated example of Sri Lankan corundum, suitable for collectors and for settings that value documented, unmodified material. corundum s hardness and chemical stability make it an enduring choice for jewelry designed to be worn and enjoyed for generations.
