The journey of this cushion shaped orangish yellow sapphire began deep in the alluvial gravels of Ceylon, where generations of Sri Lankan miners have long searched riverbeds and hillside deposits for corundum that glows with life. Our local partners carefully recovered the rough crystal, rejecting material that lacked depth or clarity and preserving only those pieces with natural transparency and lively color. At The Natural Sapphire Company we take pride in personally selecting rough from trusted sources so that the story of each gem is traceable from mine to market. The chosen rough was sent to an experienced cutter who understood that this particular crystal’s value would be revealed by a mixed brilliant faceting scheme. The cutter worked to retain weight while opening the pavilion to maximize light return, carefully shaping the piece to the finished dimensions of 6.33 by 4.53 by 3.59 millimeters. A controlled heat treatment, the industry standard for improving color stability and removing undesirable tones, was applied to bring out the intense orangish yellow that makes this sapphire so sing. After treatment the gem was closely examined at eye level to confirm its slightly included clarity grade, and it received an excellent polish that enhances both brilliance and durability.
Compared to the many yellow sapphires on the market this 1.04 carat cushion offers a superior combination of color intensity, cut quality, and finish. Many stones of similar carat weight appear flat or washed out because cutters prioritize weight retention over optical performance, or because the material itself was weak in color. This sapphire’s mixed brilliant cut was chosen to deliver a lively face up that magnifies its intense color and conceals minor inclusions when viewed in everyday wear. Where some yellow sapphires are heavily fracture filled or subjected to surface diffusion to artificially create color, this gem benefits from a traditional and stable heat enhancement that enhances the natural hue without compromising the stone’s integrity. The slightly included clarity, evaluated at eye level, is typical of natural corundum and serves as a hallmark of authenticity; it does not detract from the gem’s beauty when set, because the excellent polish and well-proportioned facets return light in a way that makes the color read brighter and more uniform than many stones that are nominally clearer but poorly cut. In practical terms this means you get a visually impactful, intensely colored stone that offers better everyday appearance and long term value than larger, duller stones or small stones with brighter but unstable treatments.
When considering rings, pendants, or bespoke pieces this sapphire’s cushion shape and 1.04 carat weight provide exceptional design flexibility. The compact dimensions make it ideal for classic solitaires, halo settings that amplify color, or modern bezel mounts that highlight the gem’s warmth while protecting the girdle. As corundum, sapphires are among the hardest and most durable colored gems commonly used in fine jewelry, so this piece will withstand daily wear far better than many yellow alternatives such as citrine or topaz while retaining its luster over decades. Choosing this sapphire through The Natural Sapphire Company means you are buying more than a pretty stone. You are buying a responsibly sourced, hand-selected gem whose cut and polish were optimized to show its best face, a gem that has been treated only by time-tested heat enhancement, and a piece that our gemological team has graded and photographed to accurately represent its appearance. Compared with many mass-market offerings the real advantage here is transparency of origin, expert cutting for maximum brilliance, and a color that captures attention without resorting to unstable or artificial enhancements. If you value a natural, beautifully cut, intensely colored Ceylon sapphire that balances rarity, wearability, and long term value this orangish yellow cushion is a distinctive choice. Contact The Natural Sapphire Company to discuss settings, see additional photos, or arrange a personal viewing so you can experience how this gem’s tone and fire will complement your design vision.
