Product description

At The Natural Sapphire Company we present a single, translucent, oval blue star sapphire weighing 6.07 carat, with calibrated dimensions of 9.56 x 8.62 x 7.45 mm. The gem is fashioned as a traditional cabochon, the preferred cutting style for asteriated corundum, with a well proportioned dome that balances internal silk visibility and surface silhouette, the cabochon profile preserving a distinct six ray star that responds predictably to directional lighting. Clarity is graded slightly included at eye level, indicating presence of fine silk and minor crystal inclusions that act constructively in producing the asterism while not disrupting the overall translucency. Color reads as medium intensity blue, a typical Ceylon characteristic, exhibiting an even saturation across the table and along the girdle, the tone falling in the mid range where both the blue hue and the white star remain visually distinct. The polish is excellent, the surface free of polish lines and abrasions, which is critical to maintaining a sharp star image, and importantly, there has been no enhancement, the stone remaining wholly natural in its color and optical features, provenance recorded as Ceylon, Sri Lanka.

Optical and gemological behavior of this specimen warrants detailed handling considerations when moving it from loupe to mount, the asterism deriving from oriented rutile silk aligned along crystallographic planes, the star sharpness being a function of the dome curvature and the concentration and alignment of those needle inclusions. Under single point light the star centers and forms a clean, defined cross that tracks across the surface, and when illuminated by diffuse light the stone reveals its internal translucency and subtle zoning. Because the cabochon has appreciable height, the star retains integrity under varied viewing angles, however orientation in the setting is decisive, the six ray axis ideally set perpendicular to the finger for rings, and aligned with the long axis of an oval for pendants and brooches, this orientation preserving the star symmetry. The stone benefits from a setting that allows controlled light interaction, an open gallery will permit transmitted light to enhance the body color and show depth, while a lightly screened or closed back on darker metal will increase contrast between the white star and the blue field if a more dramatic asterism is desired.

For custom work, consider combinations that respect the sapphire innate properties, diamonds being the most complementary due to their colorless brilliance which frames the star without competing chromatically, small round brilliant melee set in a halo or pavé band will create a scintillating bezel of light that lifts the eye to the central star, whereas tapered baguette shoulders will elongate the profile and accentuate the oval dimensions. For a warmer contrast, consider pairing with champagne or cognac diamonds, or a mixed palette of pink sapphires in small calibrated rounds to introduce a modern, feminine counterpoint to the cool blue, note that pink accents should be kept in small sizes to avoid overwhelming the cabochon, the visual balance achieved by size grading and careful color matching. Metal selection influences apparent color, platinum or 18 karat white gold will read as crisp and clinical, reinforcing the white star and cool blue, while 18 karat yellow or rose gold will warm the reflections and give the medium intensity blue a richer context, settings with low metal bezel thickness will maximize visible girdle and allow the lab measured dimensions to sit true to finger size. For collectors interested in high contrast ensembles, pairing with green tsavorite garnets or deep blue faceted sapphires set as flanking stones will create a museum quality triptych, the faceted cuts providing scintillation to play against the stationary, moving asterism of the central cabochon. Our gem specialists at The Natural Sapphire Company can provide custom design sketches and technical mounting recommendations to ensure the final piece preserves the star alignment, protects the slightly included clarity from stress, and optimizes light interplay to showcase the unique optical phenomenon of this Ceylon star sapphire.
