From the ancient alluvial terraces of Ceylon to the skilled hands of our lapidaries, this 3.38 carat oval shape bluish grey star sapphire began life as a hidden treasure in Sri Lanka, a land celebrated for sapphires that have adorned royal jewels and local lore for centuries. Miners carefully recovered the rough within deposits that have yielded some of the world’s most evocative stones, and our team at The Natural Sapphire Company guided the rough through a practiced journey of shaping and enhancement. The gemstone was heat treated to stabilize and deepen its color, then shaped into a classic cabochon to reveal its inner life. Measuring 11.06 by 8.11 by 3.23 millimeters, the gem presents a translucent body with dark color intensity and a clarity grade of slightly included when evaluated at eye level. Each of these characteristics reflects decisions made to honor the stone’s natural personality while delivering durability and optical drama, all finished with an excellent polish that allows light to glide across its surface.
Under light, the stone reveals its most compelling story, a natural asterism that produces a crisp star of light that seems to float on the surface. The star manifests as intersecting white rays that cross the dome in a clear, four to six ray pattern depending on viewing angle, shifting as you move the gem and responding to both focused and diffuse illumination. The cabochon cutting accentuates these silky needle inclusions, aligning them so the star centers when light is directed to the surface. As corundum, this sapphire rates nine on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond, and far harder than common gems such as quartz and topaz, ensuring excellent resistance to scratches and everyday wear when set in a ring or pendant. For the collector who values storied origin, tactile presence, and practical durability, this Ceylon star sapphire is a living piece of geological history, ready to be cherished and worn, offered with the provenance and care that define The Natural Sapphire Company.
