Product description

This graceful oval black star sapphire weighs 2.43 carats and measures 8.92 by 6.66 by 4.04 millimeters, presented in a classic cabochon cut that emphasizes its rich, dark color intensity and the distinctive star like asterism that appears with a single strong light source. The gem is opaque, with an even body color that ranges from deep charcoal to near black depending on viewing angle and lighting, and it displays an excellent polish that delivers a clean, satiny surface and strong reflec tions of light across the dome. There is no enhancement, the gem is natural and untreated, and its origin is Ceylon Sri Lanka, a source renowned for producing exceptional sapphire material over many generations. The overall proportions are well balanced for immediate use in a variety of jewelry settings, the surface is smooth and symmetrical, and the cabochon dome has been skillfully shaped to produce a centered and distinct star when the stone is oriented to light.

From a gemological perspective this specimen exemplifies how structural characteristics determine optical effects and market value, the star is caused by oriented needle like inclusions that scatter light in intersecting directions creating the familiar multi ray asterism, these inclusions are typically rutile and are intrinsic to star sapphires rather than a clarity defect in the conventional sense. The cabochon cutting style is the only practical and historically correct way to bring out asterism, and the height and symmetry of the dome directly affect the sharpness and mobility of the star. Because the body color is dark and the material is opaque, the clarity grade used for faceted transparent stones is not applicable here in the same way, however the uniformity of the color and the absence of surface reaching pits or fractures are important quality indicators, this stone has an excellent polish which enhances its light return and the contrast that makes the star noticeable. As a corundum, sapphire rates nine on the Mohs hardness scale, which means this gem will stand up extremely well to everyday wear when set appropriately and cared for gently, the absence of enhancements also means that its appearance is stable under normal conditions.

Collectors and educated buyers place premium value on several attributes that this black star sapphire embodies, first its natural untreated status from a historically respected origin such as Ceylon Sri Lanka increases desirability relative to stones that have been subjected to dyeing or heat treatments, second the clear and centered asterism is a signature feature that commands attention and distinguishes it from ordinary dark cabochons, third the weight of 2.43 carats in an appealing oval design provides substantial presence for a ring or pendant without overwhelming fine metal work. In the world of colored gemstones provenance matters, and Ceylon material is prized not only for its aesthetic qualities but also for the long documented history of mining and skilled local cutting, this provenance paired with documented absence of treatments adds transparency and confidence for connoisseurs who evaluate gemstones on both aesthetic and ethical grounds. For buyers who prioritize long term value, an untreated natural star sapphire of this size and quality is attractive as an heirloom piece, and The Natural Sapphire Company can assist with independent gemological verification upon request to document the stone characteristics and support provenance claims.

The versatility of this black star sapphire makes it a compelling choice for both casual and formal settings, in a daytime or casual design the gem provides a striking focal point whether set in a low profile bezel ring or a simple pendant that can be worn every day, its dark tone harmonizes with leather and textured metals as well as with linen and cashmere, for formal occasions the stone acquires a dramatic and refined air when set with polished yellow gold or with cool platinum, surrounding accent diamonds or white sapphires can be used sparingly to enhance the visual drama of the star without overpowering the cabochon elegance. Because of its durable corundum composition it is suitable for a variety of jewelry types, including rings, pendants, cufflinks, and statement earrings, and because it is untreated and natural it holds storytelling value that many buyers find compelling when selecting an engagement ring alternative or a signature piece. At The Natural Sapphire Company we are happy to advise on ideal mounting styles to preserve the star effect and to recommend metals and settings that will balance protection with display. If you would like additional photographs, the opportunity to see the star under different lighting conditions, or assistance with custom design options and certification, our gem specialists are available to guide you through every step of the purchase and setting process.
