This purple star sapphire began its journey in the highland deposits of Ceylon, Sri Lanka, where artisanal and small scale mining recovers nodules of corundum from weathered gravels. Each rough piece is hand sorted at the mine site for clarity and color potential, then carefully packed and transported under chain of custody to our cutting and evaluation facilities. During initial inspection the crystal showed transparent body color and well defined silk inclusions conducive to asterism, a characteristic that guided the decision to fashion it as a cabochon to maximize the star effect. The cutting process was executed by experienced lapidaries who oriented the crystal to align the rutile needles with the dome, and who progressively refined the shape to the present oval profile. Polishing was completed to an excellent finish, preserving the stone s natural transparency and light response, while avoiding the surface disturbances that can diminish asterism. The gem was then evaluated using standard gemological protocols, and cataloged with a clarity grade slightly included, evaluated at eye level, intensive color intensity, and no enhancement.
The finished gem is a transparent, oval shaped purple star sapphire, 1.10 carat, with dimensions 6.42 by 5.11 by 3.38 mm, cut as a cabochon, with an excellent polish and a clear star effect visible under direct light. Its color exhibits a deep violet purple that remains strong through the dome, while internal silk creates the distinct star that moves across the surface as the stone is tilted. Origin Ceylon, Sri Lanka, and no enhancement were recorded, providing a straightforward disclosure of its natural state. At The Natural Sapphire Company we document each stage of this gem s progression from mine to market, and this example illustrates our emphasis on traceability, craftsmanship, and accurate description. The size and shape make it suitable for a variety of settings where the cabochon profile and asterism are the focal point, and the slightly included grade offers natural character without undermining visual appeal. For clients seeking a naturally occurring star sapphire with documented origin and unchanged treatment status, this stone provides a technically specified, well prepared example.
