Product description

This pink sapphire began its story millions of years ago deep within the metamorphic terranes of Ceylon, Sri Lanka, where intense heat and pressure transformed aluminum rich sediments into crystalline corundum. Trace concentrations of chromium during crystal growth imparted the pink hue, while slow cooling permitted the formation of well defined crystal faces. Over successive geological cycles, tectonic uplift and erosion liberated corundum crystals from the host gneiss and schist, allowing rivers and monsoon driven streams to transport and sort the heavier gem bearing fragments into alluvial gravels. In that long process of burial, uplift, abrasion, and redeposition, the rough crystal that would become this sapphire was rounded and concentrated, preserving internal growth features and inclusions that record its natural history. The interplay of mineral chemistry, pressure, and temperature produced a transparent crystal with sufficient clarity to transmit light, while the regional geology of Sri Lanka concentrated these gem corundums into accessible deposits that have produced notable sapphires for centuries.

This individual gem is a transparent 2.60 carat oval shape pink sapphire, measuring 9.97 x 7.13 x 4.48 mm, cut in a mixed brilliant style to balance scintillation and face up color. The clarity is graded as included when evaluated at eye level, indicating naturally occurring internal characteristics visible without magnification that are consistent with its alluvial and metamorphic origin. The color intensity is light, reflecting a delicate pink derived from chromium content, and the finish exhibits excellent polish, allowing clean surface reflection and optimal light return from the mixed brilliant faceting. The stone has been heat treated, a common and stable enhancement applied to sapphires to improve color uniformity and to reduce certain growth related inclusions, and this treatment is disclosed consistently with industry practice. Origin is Ceylon, Sri Lanka, a provenance noted for gem quality corundum formed in ancient metamorphic terranes. The Natural Sapphire Company presents this sapphire with factual details regarding its formation, treatment, and characteristics, providing a precise account of its geological origin, physical dimensions, optical properties, and finish.
