Product description

Brought to light from the red soils and ancient alluvial gravels of Madagascar, this purplish pink sapphire carries a story that began long before it was seen by human hands. In remote creek beds and terraced deposits, seasonal rains washed away lighter rock and left behind concentrated pockets of corundum crystals, patiently waiting to be noticed. Local miners, following generations of tradition and intuition, recovered rough pieces that hinted at uncommon color and clarity. From that rough, one particular crystal stood out for its lively hue and transparent nature, and it found its way into the careful hands of our team. At The Natural Sapphire Company we honor that journey, from the first discovery beneath Madagascar skies to the thoughtful choices that guided this gem toward its final form.

Weighing 2.22 carat, shaped into a classic oval with dimensions of 9.00 x 6.78 x 4.03 mm, this transparent sapphire was given new life through a faceted mixed brilliant cut that balances scintillation with table transparency. The cutter considered the stone as a whole, preserving weight and maximizing color, while creating a harmony between the crown and pavilion facets that returns light with lively brilliance. The color sits in an intense register, a purplish pink that reads as both feminine and substantial, and the polish is excellent across all facets, allowing light to stream without distraction. The clarity was evaluated at eye level as very slightly included, a grade that speaks to a mostly clean window to the stone with only minor inclusions upon careful inspection. This sapphire has been heat treated, a common and stable enhancement that enhances color and clarity in a way that remains permanent with normal wear.

The inclusions present within this sapphire are not flaws to be hidden, they are unique identifiers that tell of the gems origin and its natural history. Seen under loupe or with careful study at eye level, these features are subtle, a whisper of the conditions under which the sapphire formed. Fine, needle like silk threads trace internal paths, tiny crystals sit like fossilized seeds within the corundum, and faint feather like wisps reveal moments of stress and healing as the crystal grew. Each inclusion is a signature of the earth, a microscopic landscape that separates this stone from every other. For gemologists and connoisseurs these natural fingerprints support origin assessments and provide confidence when combined with known characteristics of Madagascar sapphires. For the wearer, these minute features create inner life, breaking up light in gentle ways and ensuring that no two viewing angles are ever identical.

In the hand this purplish pink oval feels balanced, a gem that will translate beautifully into a ring, a pendant, or an heirloom piece meant to be worn and loved. Its intense color and transparent nature make it versatile for many settings and metals, and the mixed brilliant faceting means it will catch both broad flashes and delicate pinfire scintillation. Because the sapphire has been heat treated, standard care and regular inspections are fully appropriate, and the excellent polish will help maintain the stone's face up presence. At The Natural Sapphire Company we accompany each gemstone with the knowledge of its origin, its treatments, and its unique internal story, and we stand ready to help you choose settings that honor the gem rather than conceal it. If you are seeking a stone that connects earth and craft, that carries the narrative of Madagascar and the skill of the cutter, this 2.22 carat purplish pink sapphire offers a living, wearable fragment of that story.
