Product description

This specimen from The Natural Sapphire Company is a transparent, oval shape sapphire weighing 2.11 carats, measuring 7.97 by 7.06 by 4.89 millimeters, and presenting a pinkish purple hue with intense color intensity. The oval outline has been shaped to balance face up spread with depth, yielding an appearance on the finger that reads larger than the weight alone would suggest. The color sits in the pink violet to purple range, with a saturation that remains lively under varied lighting, and the stone exhibits clean transparency through the table and upper pavilion facets. Origin is Ceylon Sri Lanka, a proven source for sapphires that often display a delicate interplay between chromium derived pink tones and iron or titanium influenced purple and violet modifiers, and the gem has undergone a standard and stable heat treatment to refine hue and clarity which is fully disclosed.

Cut and finish are critical to extracting optical performance from a colored corundum and this sapphire has been fashioned in a mixed brilliant cut configuration. The crown displays a combination of kite and star facets that feed light to the table, while the pavilion uses tapered brilliant facets that aim to return light efficiently to the observer. The mixed approach helps concentrate color and brilliance in a relatively shallow oval profile, and the polish is graded excellent, producing crisp facet junctions and minimal surface haze. Clarity is evaluated as very very slightly included at eye level, indicating that any internal features are minute and do not interrupt light transmission or dominate the face up view. The gem is transparent, and the inclusion character typical of natural corundum confirms natural formation, offering pinpoint crystals or faint rutile needles that can create subtle silk without compromising the gem clarity grade.

From a gemological standpoint this sapphire embodies the durable optical properties of corundum, a mineral with a refractive index near 1.76 to 1.77, modest birefringence, and a Mohs hardness of nine which ensures excellent wearability in everyday jewelry. The intense color is the result of trace element chemistry within the crystal lattice, principally chromium when pink tones are present, with additional modulation by iron and titanium that shifts the perceived hue toward violet and purple. Heat treatment, when applied professionally, modifies existing chromophore sites to enhance color uniformity and reduce interfering inclusions, and the result is a stable, long lasting improvement that does not compromise the stone structure. The mixed brilliant faceting and excellent polish maximize scintillation, while the oval shape provides classical symmetry and versatility for ring or pendant settings. These combined attributes create a gemstone that balances visual impact with field proven durability.

When compared to lab grown sapphires the advantages of a natural Ceylon origin stone become evident to collectors and connoisseurs who value provenance and geological uniqueness. Lab grown material can achieve remarkable clarity and uniform color, and it is often produced with fewer inclusions and at lower cost, however growth structures and inclusion types differ in ways that trained gemmologists can readily detect. Natural stones carry a fingerprint of their formation environment, including natural zoning patterns, mineral inclusions, and trace element distributions that are difficult to replicate in synthetic growth processes. Natural sapphires from Ceylon are also rarer at specific color and clarity combinations, which supports long term collector interest and often stronger secondary market performance. The Natural Sapphire Company provides full disclosure of enhancement and origin, and for buyers who prioritize geological authenticity and the subtle complexity that natural formation yields, this 2.11 carat pinkish purple oval offers an unrivaled combination of color, cut, clarity, and provenance.
