Product description

This gem is a transparent purplish pink sapphire, oval shape, 2.09 carat, with exact dimensions 9.72 x 6.70 x 3.52 mm. The cutting style is faceted with a mixed brilliant cut, producing a refined interplay between large table facets and numerous smaller crown and pavilion facets. Clarity is graded as very very slightly included at eye level, indicating exceptional visual purity. Color intensity is medium, presenting a balanced purplish pink tone that reads richly in daylight and under controlled lighting. The surface finish is described as excellent polish, and there has been no enhancement to the stone. The sapphire originates from Ceylon Sri Lanka, a source known for lively coloration and fine crystal quality.

The intrinsic structure of corundum, the mineral species to which sapphire belongs, underpins the gem’s optical performance. Corundum has a refractive index in the range of approximately 1.762 to 1.770, which is substantially higher than many other gem materials. That higher refractive index means light entering the sapphire is more strongly bent and confined within the stone before it is returned to the viewer, creating pronounced internal reflection. Corundum’s dispersion is modest relative to diamond, at about 0.018, so while the separate spectral colors are not thrown as distinctly, the strength of internal light return and contrast produces a rich, lively brilliance. The crystalline lattice of corundum transmits light cleanly when inclusions are minimal, and with this specimen graded very very slightly included at eye level, light paths remain largely uninterrupted. The result is a sustained, crisp scintillation rather than a diffuse glow.

The mixed brilliant cut employed in this oval sapphire is a deliberate choice to maximize the interaction between the stone’s form and its optical constants. Mixed brilliant cuts combine the broad, step-like planes of the pavilion with the small, faceted geometry of a brilliant crown. Crown facets serve primarily to break and scatter light as it enters, yielding lively scintillation and localized flashes, while pavilion facets are shaped to reflect that light back through the crown with optimized angles for internal reflection. In a material with corundum’s refractive index, properly proportioned facet angles increase the likelihood that light will meet internal surfaces at or above the critical angle for total internal reflection, thus preserving intensity and contrast. The oval outline and the given dimensions produce a sizable face up area, which enhances the apparent color and allows the mixed facet structure to display a pronounced contrast pattern. Pleochroism, a characteristic of sapphire where different crystal directions reveal subtly different hues, further enriches the visual experience. Depending on viewing angle and orientation, the stone offers alternating notes of purplish and pink violet, creating dynamic color flashes that complement the strong facet driven brilliance. Because the cut balances pavilion depth and crown dispersion, the stone exhibits both lively sparkle and even color distribution across the table.

Surface quality and natural state are critical to the visible sparkle and long term stability of any sapphire. The excellent polish on this stone means facet surfaces are smooth and mirror like, allowing incident light to be returned cleanly rather than scattered by surface imperfections. Facet junctions that are sharp and well defined contribute to crisp contrast and enable precise, lively scintillation as the stone moves. The very very slightly included clarity grade evaluated at eye level signifies that inclusions, if present, are minute and do not interrupt the stone’s internal light return in any meaningful way. Importantly, this sapphire has no enhancements, so the color and optical behavior observed are the result of natural crystal chemistry and the careful cut alone. The Ceylon origin of the material is consistent with the observed medium color intensity and lively tone, characteristics that have made Sri Lankan sapphires prized for their brightness and clean color. Taken together, the corundum structure, the mixed brilliant facet architecture, the excellent polish, the minimal inclusion profile, and the unenhanced natural color produce a sparkle and dynamic light performance that stands apart from many other gems. This balance of material quality and cutting strategy is the hallmark of the pieces we present at The Natural Sapphire Company.
