From the ancient, weathered hills of Ceylon Sri Lanka comes a story that begins long before it found its way into light, a story that we at The Natural Sapphire Company are privileged to share. Deep within metamorphic rock, aluminum and trace chromium and iron slowly crystallized under heat and pressure, forming corundum that would one day reveal a pinkish purple heart. Miners working by hand and by traditional methods carefully extracted rough crystals with respect for place and people, sending selected pieces to master cutters who could see the potential within. This 1.65 carat pear shape pinkish purple sapphire arrived in our workshop as a promising rough, transparent and pure in tone, ready to be transformed. Its origins in Ceylon Sri Lanka give it a lineage of color and vitality that sings of island soils and monsoon rhythms, and from that earth it carries a soulful brightness that a skilled cutter would honor rather than obscure.
In the hands of our cutter the sapphire was given a mixed brilliant cut that marries the depth of step cutting with the fire of brilliant faceting, a design chosen to amplify the stone inherent play of light. Measuring 9.99 by 6.04 by 3.60 millimeters the pear silhouette provides a graceful silhouette that guides light from the broad table into a precise pavilion, and back through the crown as lively flashes and sustained brilliance. The mixed brilliant cut places a crown of angled facets above a pavilion of carefully calibrated pavillion facets, creating a dance of internal reflection that enhances both scintillation and dispersion, while the tapered point of the pear adds a directional sparkle that lengthens the visual line when set. Because this sapphire is transparent and carries an intense color intensity the facets capture and saturate tone without looking heavy, the excellent polish allowing every facet plane to act as a mirror. At eye level the clarity grade is very very slightly included, evaluated at eye level, which means the gem reads clean to the viewer while carrying tiny natural signatures that confirm its authenticity and origin. There has been no enhancement, so the color and clarity are wholly natural, a direct offering from the mines of Ceylon into the lap of craftsmanship, and the result is a gem that balances vivid hue with lively return of light.
To the person who will wear this sapphire it will feel like a small jewel of place and time, an object that links the hand that found it to the hand that wears it. The pear shape is eminently wearable, flattering on a ring where the tapered point can lengthen a finger, or elegant as the centerpiece of a pendant where the mixed brilliant cut will shimmer with every step. Its intense pinkish purple offers versatility, pairing with warm yellow metals to emphasize depth, or with white metals to highlight its crystalline clarity and light return. At The Natural Sapphire Company we imagine this sapphire set as an heirloom in which the story of Ceylon Sri Lanka, expert cutting, and meticulous finishing are all visible in the way light passes through it. If you seek a stone that is simultaneously bold in color and refined in optical performance, a gem that is naturally untreated and honestly graded, this pear shape 1.65 carat sapphire will give you a narrative to carry for decades, a jewel that was born in the earth and perfected by human hands, ready to begin its next chapter with you.
