This purplish pink sapphire began its journey beneath the weathered soils of Ceylon Sri Lanka, in a region long associated with some of the finest sapphires in the world. Mined by small scale operations that blend traditional methods with careful modern oversight, the rough material was recovered from alluvial gravels and riverbeds where sapphire crystals lie concentrated in ancient sediments. From the moment the nugget was extracted, it entered a chain of custodianship designed to preserve both the stone and its provenance. Initial sorting and washing removed surface grit and revealed the crystal form and internal features, enabling experienced pickers to separate gem quality material from lower grade host rock. The rough was catalogued and photographed, and basic measurements were recorded before it left the field site. Throughout this process attention was paid to environmental considerations and local labour practices, and each step was documented to ensure transparency from the mine through to the cutting bench. The Natural Sapphire Company follows these records carefully, confirming origin and traceability for each notable gem we bring to market.
At the cutting stage the rough was evaluated by an experienced lapidary with a focus on maximizing color and brilliance while retaining weight. The cutter chose a heart shape to emphasize the stone s natural appeal and to create a balanced outline with symmetrical lobes and a precise cleft. The dimensions after cutting are 6.89 x 7.72 x 3.29 mm, with a finished weight of 1.52 carats. The cutting style is faceted, set in a mixed brilliant cut configuration to combine the scintillation of brilliant facets with pavilion geometry that enhances depth and color saturation. Before cutting the stone underwent an accepted heat treatment, a stable and controlled enhancement process used widely in the sapphire trade to clarify tone and to reduce silk and other minor inclusions that can obscure the gem s potential. Heating was carried out under controlled conditions, monitored to avoid over treatment, and resulting changes were carefully documented to maintain full disclosure for the eventual owner.
Following cutting and heat treatment the gem received meticulous finishing work, achieving an excellent polish and precise facet junctions that contribute to its lively appearance. The clarity is graded as very slightly included, evaluated at eye level, meaning that inclusions are minor and do not detract from the overall transparency or visual impact under normal viewing conditions. Color intensity is described as intense, and the hue presents as a purplish pink that shifts subtly with changes in light, a characteristic prized in sapphires from Ceylon Sri Lanka. The mixed brilliant cut promotes active scintillation, while the heart outline provides a pleasing silhouette for use in a variety of jewellery settings. The faceting plan was executed to balance light return with color retention, yielding a gem that appears lively in both direct and diffuse illumination. Precise dimensions and proportions were maintained to ensure comfortable wear ability and to provide predictable optical behavior when set.
When the finished sapphire arrived at our laboratory it underwent final inspection and documentation by The Natural Sapphire Company s gemological team. Measurements, weight, cut style, clarity grade, color description, polish assessment, treatment disclosure, and origin notation were all recorded in a detailed dossier to accompany the gem. Photographs from multiple angles were produced to illustrate its symmetry and optical performance, and handling recommendations were prepared to assist the jeweller or owner in making an informed choice of setting. The stone is presented with provenance information and a clear description of the heat treatment that was applied, reflecting our commitment to transparency. From its place in the riverbeds of Ceylon Sri Lanka, through careful human hands at the cutting bench, to the finishing table and finally to the marketplace, this 1.52 carat heart shape purplish pink sapphire represents a traceable journey of craftsmanship and stewardship. It is offered as a precisely characterized natural gem, ready to be set and enjoyed for generations, accompanied by the documentation and quality assurance standards upheld by The Natural Sapphire Company.
