Product description

This 0.99 carat cushion shape pink sapphire from Madagascar is an exceptional example of fine corundum. The stone measures 5.68 by 5.65 by 3.08 millimeters, presenting nearly perfect symmetry between length and width which is a hallmark of quality cutting. The cushion outline is slightly rounded at the corners, and the compact dimensions yield a pleasing table to depth relationship. Cut as a mixed brilliant, this sapphire combines a brilliant style crown with a modified pavilion that maximizes return of light, creating lively scintillation across the face of the gem. Weight retention is excellent for a pavilion oriented mixed cut of this size, producing a stone that carries near one carat presence while maintaining ideal proportions for mounting in a variety of settings. The origin Madagascar contributes to the stone character, and The Natural Sapphire Company is pleased to present this gem with full disclosure of its provenance.

The mixed brilliant faceting is executed to high technical standards, the crown facets are arranged to optimize small and large facet interplay, generating a dynamic pattern of flash and table brilliance. The pavilion exhibits controlled angles that favor internal reflection rather than leakage, and facet junctions are sharp and consistent. With a measured depth of 3.08 millimeters against an average diameter of 5.665 millimeters, the depth percent is approximately 54 point 3 percent, which sits well within the optimal range for cushion cuts to balance brilliance and face up size. Excellent polish is evident under loupe and naked eye examination, the facet planes present smooth, mirror like surfaces with no visible polish lines, and the girdle is even, neither excessively thin nor overly thick, providing secure seating for prongs or a bezel without compromising light performance.

Color is where this sapphire truly distinguishes itself, described as intense in color intensity with a pure pink hue and strong saturation. The color distribution is even across the table with no perceptible zoning at normal viewing distances, and the tone remains bright enough to show vividness while retaining depth when viewed face up. Pink sapphires commonly exhibit weak to moderate pleochroism, and this specimen displays a pleasing consistency between face up and table down views, indicating a well oriented cut relative to the crystal axis. Heat treatment has been applied, a standard and stable enhancement for Malagasy sapphires, used to clarify silk and to refine hue and saturation. The treatment is permanent under normal wear conditions, and does not affect the gemological identity of the sapphire, however professional settings and repairs should account for the presence of heat treatment when considering any high temperature processes.

From a clarity and durability perspective the stone is graded very very slightly included evaluated at eye level, which in practical terms means the gem is effectively eye clean, with only minute inclusions detectable to an experienced grader under 10 times magnification. These inclusions do not interfere with light transmission or optical performance, and in some cases contribute to the material character that connoisseurs appreciate. As corundum, the sapphire sits at nine on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, second only to diamond which registers at ten. To provide context, sapphire is considerably harder than topaz which is eight, and quartz which is seven, making this stone highly resistant to abrasion and overall suitable for everyday wear in rings and bracelets. Technical gemological parameters include a refractive index in the range of approximately 1.762 to 1.770, birefringence around 0.008 to 0.010, specific gravity near 3.99 to 4.00, and low dispersion which favors a controlled, refined sparkle rather than the rainbow flashes seen in higher dispersion gems. For mounting, we recommend a well engineered prong setting or a low profile bezel to protect the girdle, and The Natural Sapphire Company can advise on ideal setting proportions to preserve the stone integrity while showcasing its intense pink color and excellent cut.
