From the moment this rough corundum emerged from the alluvial terraces of Madagascar, its potential was apparent. Miners in the field identified a clean translucent material with a naturally saturated green tone, and the piece was routed to our sorting house for evaluation. At The Natural Sapphire Company we begin grading in situ, mapping color distribution under standardized daylight and transmitted light sources, and assessing internal structure and inclusions. This particular piece revealed a consistent intense green color with a clarity that reads slightly included at eye level, a characteristic common to natural material that has not been subjected to diffusion or heat enhancement. The absence of any treatment is central to the gemstone story, the stone being natural and unenhanced, a quality that preserves the natural pleochroic tendencies of corundum and gives the gem its lively color shifts when rotated under light.
The cutting plan was driven by a single objective, to maximize color saturation while preserving carat weight and achieving optimal light performance. The rough was orientated so that the pavilion axis aligned with the strongest color zone, a decision that retained the intense green saturation instead of diluting it along a shorter axis. The cutter opted for an oval outline measuring 7.19 by 5.61 millimeters with a finished depth of 3.75 millimeters, yielding a depth to average diameter ratio of approximately 59 percent. The cutting design is a mixed brilliant, with a brilliant facet arrangement on the crown to produce scintillation and a carefully faceted pavilion to control light return and color saturation. Facet junctions were managed to tight tolerances, and the girdle was kept to a thin to medium profile to balance durability and visual weight. The polish was taken to an excellent finish, meaning facet surfaces are free of polish lines and abrasions, and meet the high luster required to broadcast the stone s color and internal features.
Clarity and optical characteristics were considered at each stage. The piece grades slightly included when viewed unaided at typical inspection distances, a practical grading that acknowledges the presence of tiny natural inclusions that do not detract from overall transparency or brilliance. These internal features also serve as natural fingerprints, confirming the stone s origin and natural formation. Optical behavior shows strong transmission and lively internal reflections, with subtle pleochroism presenting as blue green to yellow green flashes depending on orientation and light source. The mixed brilliant schema accentuates these effects, allowing the crown to break light into lively flashes, while the pavilion returns depth of tone. With an intense color intensity and excellent polish, the gem sits at a technical sweet spot where color saturation, cutting proportions, and surface finish converge to produce an object that reads as both vibrant and refined.
Final stages encompassed gemological documentation, imaging, and presentation for market. At The Natural Sapphire Company the finished gem was photographed in multiple orientations to communicate color, cut, and face up appearance accurately. We include precise measurements and carat weight, 1.18 carats, with dimensions 7.19 by 5.61 by 3.75 millimeters, and record the mixed brilliant cut and no enhancement status to ensure full transparency. The stone is ideal for a custom ring setting that protects the girdle and pavilion while allowing the crown to display scintillation. The combination of intense green color, natural clarity grade, and meticulous cutting makes this sapphire desirable for connoisseurs who value technical craftsmanship and natural provenance. From artisanal mining in Madagascar, through considered preforming and faceting, to final polished presentation and certification, this sapphire exemplifies the deliberate technical choices that define superior natural gems.
